9/27/04 KEY MORAL ISSUES - VOTER GUIDE
Quote from Forum Archives on September 27, 2004, 9:10 pmPosted by: jhbreneman <jhbreneman@...>
A SPECIAL EDITIONDear "Heart to Heart" ladies,This special edition of the Heart to Heart Newsletter is being sent for the sole purpose of helping to inform you on key moral issues that already affect the Christian family or certainly will in the near future. I want to make it clear that this is not sent for the purpose of telling you for whom to vote on November 2. This newsletter is also sent in hopes of motivating all Christians to make their voices known as they vote in this election and future elections. The Christian vote could well be the determining factor on who wins this election. The side opposing moral values and Christianity is most definitely motivated and they already know this is the most crucial election ever. Christians cannot afford to sit this one out! The stakes are extremely high as we choose the president who will have a deciding factor on many crucial issues, as never before. Some of those issues are the war on terror, the defense of innocent human life or the destruction of those lives, the protection of marriage between one man and one woman or the ungodly redefining of it, the preservation of religious speech and expression of it or the squelching of religious freedom. As of this date the 2004 election is extremely close, and we all painfully remember the hanging chads of 2000! So every vote definitely does counts! Other elections in history have been decided by only one vote or very few votes! In 1954 only one vote or less per precinct determined Averell Harriman's gubernatorial election. The same was true in George McGovern's Senate race in 1960 and John Warner's senatorial election in 1978. In 1960 the presidential race between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon was also extremely close. In fact, in the end they found that these two candidates were separated nationwide by only an average margin of one half vote per precinct! You or someone you know could have been the deciding vote! The 2004 election will determine major overall issues that will govern the future for each of us, our children, our grandchildren and generations to come, if the Lord does not come before then. But until that time, He tells us to occupy until He comes, and I believe voting intelligently, according to His Word, is just one way to obey His command. We have all heard that all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men (and women) to be silent.Let us all pray diligently for the election and carry out our responsibility to vote our values according to the principles in God's Word. Then we need to leave the rest in God's capable hands.YOUR VOTE DOES MATTER!By Scott Fowler, who sings with Legacy Five ~ August 23, 2004Note from Lois: At the time this letter was written by Scott Fowler, there were 70 more days until the election. Time is considerably shorter, with just 37 days until this most important election, and there is less than one week for registration forms to be in the hands of the Registrar's Office (by October 4). For more details, please see the additional information following this letter by Scott.Do you remember Judge Roy Moore? He was a judge in Alabama who was recently removed by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary on supposed "ethics" grounds for refusing to stop the acknowledgement of God on government property. As you recall, this was all over a monument of the ten commandments that he refused to remove from the courthouse. The monument as well as Judge Moore have now been removed by force.
That monument of the ten commandments was on display in my home town a few weeks ago. Taryn and Preston and I went to see it. While we were standing in line waiting our turn to view the now famous marble block, I couldn't help but think of all the symbols and values that we as Christians are slowly but methodically loosing as a result of our silence and tolerance. No prayer in school, no nativity scenes on the City Hall lawns, no more Christmas vacation ... it's now a "winter holiday." They are trying to get "In God We Trust" off our money and "Under God" out of our pledge.
Here's my point. Our silence as Christians has not served us well. We have a voice that when heard can make a difference. Remember ... one woman and her attorney got prayer out of our public schools. We must make ourselves heard loud and clear before we lose any more of our values that we hold dear.
We have about 70 more days until the election of our next President as well as many other national and local government officials. On that day we can easily make our voices heard without interference from lawyers, judges, courts or the ACLU.
Here are some sad facts. Of the roughly 206,000,000 people in the United States who are eligible to vote, only 156,000,000 of us are registered to do so. Of that, only 105,000,000 voted in the presidential election of 2000. That year, only 537 votes separated the winner from the looser in the state of Florida. Your vote does matter.
To the people who tell me they've lost interest in politics, or they don't like either candidate, I like the words of presidential advisor Karen Huges. She says that, "every election comes down to a choice, and perfect is not on the ballot. You may not like the candidates, but surely one of them more closely represents your views, or you think one might do a better job. You are going to end up with one of them, like it or not, so you might as well get the one you like a little better, or dislike the least. As citizens, we bear certain responsibilities. We live in this great country; Our freedoms are not free; The least we can do is participate once every four years."
Mother Theresa said. "We may sometimes feel that what we do is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that one missing drop."
So, if you are not registered to vote ... go register. Chances are some of your friends and family are not registered. Ask them if they are. Then pack up your car on November 2nd full of registered voters and go vote. Let's just see what a difference we can make.
VOTER REGISTRATION ~ TIME IS VERY SHORT! EVERY VOTE COUNTS!Voter Registration Deadline is October 4! No time to Waste!Registration forms have to be received back at the Registrar's office by October 4.How to Register:There's no need to even leave your home to register. If going Online to register (web sites below), you simply print out your completed form, and mail a signed copy to your Registrar's office.Registration forms can also be obtained at your post office, library, Division of Motor Vehicles or the Registrar's office. Your Registrar is listed in the government pages of your phone book, in case you have questions or want a registration form mailed to you.If you have moved since the last election, the Registrar can tell you where you need to vote on November 2.Register Online:Absentee Ballots:If you are already registered to vote, but will be out of town or unable to get to your voting precinct on Election Day, call your city or county Registrar for an Absentee Ballot, which will be mailed to you immediately. You can have an application for an absentee ballot sent to your children in college, so they can still vote while away from home. Call the Registrar for an application to be sent to their college address and let your child know it is on the way. Then you may have to remind them to send it in, as well as to send in their choices on the ballot.
VOTER GUIDE
Thanks to my dear friend, Margie DeMonbrun in Missouri, for sending a clear voter guide from the Citizen Leader Coalition on eight key issues. Because the format of the original voter guide did not work to send it in a newsletter, I listed the eight key issues for you, along with each candidate's position.
Gay Marriage:
President Bush - Opposed
Senator Kerry - Favors
Restoring voluntary prayer in the public schools:
President Bush - Favors
Senator Kerry - Opposed
Assault on Mel Gibson for making film about Christ:
President Bush - Supports Gibson
Senator Kerry - Participated in Left's assault on Gibson, suggesting possible anti-Semitism even though Kerry had not seen the film.
Assault on Boy Scouts for belief in God and not allowing Homosexual Scout Leaders:
President Bush - Supports Boy Scouts' Stand
Senator Kerry - Opposes Boy Scouts' Stand
Asking for God's blessing on America:
President Bush - Often asks God to bless America
Senator Kerry - Attacks Bush for mentioning God in his speeches so often
Judges:
President Bush - Says, "We need common-sense judges who believe our rights arte derived from God.
Senator Kerry - Insists on judges who support the ACLU's radical anti-Christian, anti-God, anti-family agenda. Along with Senator Ted Kennedy, leads the Left's effort in the Senate to block President Bush's federal judge appointments.
Overall Record:
President Bush - President Bush does not vote on issues before Congress but based on his publicly stated positions, would receive an 85% conservative rating from the American Conservative Union if he did.
Senator Kerry - The highly respected politically-neutral National Journal rates Kerry the most liberal U.S. Senator in 2003 - more liberal than Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton.
Citizen Leader Coalition - P. O. Box 96324 - Washington, DC 20090-6323
STEM CELL RESEARCH
This is another moral issue with opposing views by the two candidates. President Bush is being accused of not supporting stem cell research, thus not allowing for those with diseases to be cured.
The fact is that President Bush is the first president ever to appoint any funds at all for stem cell research - ($27 million in 2004). These funds were appointed to be used for adult stem cell research, which does not require the loss of life, and provides research that is very promising. The president has, however, opposed the sacrifice of frozen human embryos to be used in research, because that would most definitely end a human life. Embryonic stem cell research in mice has not been promising in the past anyway, with cancerous tumors resulting.
Some owners of frozen human embryos who no longer have need of them have adopted those precious lives out to couples who want to raise them as their very own children.
To date, fifty-five frozen embryos are now fully developed children, being held and cuddled in the arms of adoptive parents, having stories read to them, playing with toys in the family rooms, sitting at the dinner tables, being taught about Jesus and being loved and cared for as they live in adoptive families!
So - this is what Senator Kerry says he is fighting for - to "use" human embryos in the name of "Research!" Living human embryos for research, but there's just one catch. First they must give their lives!

MARRIAGE IS UNDER ATTACK IN AMERICA ...
But you can do something about it today. Call 202-224-3121 and ask for the office of your congressman. If you aren't sure who that is, call your local library and ask. On Thursday, September 30, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the "Marriage Protection Amendment" (H.J. Res. 106). This is the latest version of the Federal Marriage Amendment, defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
