Dear Hope Chest readers,
In the Hope Chest issue called Pilgrimage and Jubilee I mentioned a book called The Sacred Romance, by Brent Curtis and John Eldredge, which had been very helpful to me in my spiritual walk this summer. I want to note that it does contain some elements with a therapeutic (psychiatric) approach to counseling, which I do not endorse. I chose to ignore those concepts while reading, because I so appreciated the emphasis, especially in the first chapter, on living a deeper life and recovering a first love for God. In my mind, the other things did not negate the value of the book for a discerning reader, but I wanted to add that disclaimer.
This past weekend I started reading When People are Big and God is Small by Ed Welch. He blew away the smokescreen of "emotional needs" that I've been using as a justification for areas of my own selfishness. He reminds us that as we dwell in God's presence, we become overflowing pitchers pouring out blessings on others, not leaky little cups craving constant human affirmation. Again, this is painful but liberating. My pilgrimage is not at all over -- it lasts a lifetime! The Lord is so kind, so kind. As I've heard said, "God takes me 'just as I am' but he loves me too much to leave me there.
To help us all along the spiritual journey, I thought it might be helpful to compile a list of Biblical counseling and family life resources. I have read about half of these books and I'm familiar with all but one or two of the authors. All of these books have been recommended by pastores and Christian leaders whom I really trust.
