Dear Hope Chest friends,Yesterday, I had an unexpected opportunity to help a stranger in Jesus' name. It was one of those serendipitous situations when you look at the precise circumstances and say, "God sure worked that out right!" It was such a joyous privilege. Later, I thought to myself, "I should have given this man the New Testament I had in my purse." God's word is LIFE! It holds the answer to life's most pressing problems. It tells of God's great mercy, and his awesome salvation. We are left here on earth to be sharing his Good News! So before I went to bed, I surfed to find low cost sources for Scripture distribution. If you join the Pocket Testament League, you can get Gospels of John (NIV, NLT, KJV, Spanish, etc.) and other resources for free. Check out http://www.readcarryshare.org/You can get a case of 52 Contemporary English Version (CEV) New Testaments from the American Bible Society for only $31.20 plus shipping. That's about 60 cents per copy! Log on to www.bibles.com or call 1-800-32-BIBLE. The catalog number is #111434 for this item. The size is 5 1/4" by 8 1/4".
If you want the New International Version (NIV), the International Bible Society sells cases of 50 New Testaments for $25, which is only 50 cents per copy. Log on to www.ibsdirect.com and do a search for "New Testament" or call 1-800-524-1588. They have a variety of cover styles at this price, and the size is 5 1/4" by 8" by 3/8". A Bible reading plan and a "How to Follow Jesus" section are included. If you want to buy less than a case, they are only 65 cents each. They also have shirt pocket size red or burgundy New Testaments for $1.25 each or $99.00 for a case of 100.I mention these two versions because they are fairly easy to understand if someone doesn't have much exposure to the Bible.I have made a goal to give away a New Testament or Gospel of John every week for a year. I think this will motivate me to LOOK for people to whom I can give God's word. I've been building little friendships with store and postal clerks, and know so many of them by name now that I could easily hand out a copy with a smile. Then there are people in the midwife's office, neighbors, my children's friends, and even strangers who look a little down. I'll even keep some in the van just so I can be prepared. The Gospels of John are small enough to tuck into a purse, so I can carry them everywhere I go!Anybody care to join me in the "Give Away the Word Every Week" challenge? As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.Isaiah 55:10-11Virginia
