Dear Hope Chest friends,I'll be sending out the new issue in a few days on family ministry, but I had a few questions, updates and announcements before then.First, one of my second cousins, Margaret, is starting to home school an 8th grade daughter this year after an unsatisfactory start in the public school system. They just moved to Greensboro, North Carolina from Washington State, where she had home schooled a younger child for a year and a half. She is unfamiliar with NC home school law and would appreciate some insight. If you would be willing to walk her through this by e-mail or phone, or you know a good support group in her area, please send me your contact information as soon as possible. Margaret is also considering using the K12 on-line program. If you have any experience with this at the middle school level, please let me know about it.Second, the Walley family in Gainesville, Florida, is recovering from the staph infection that had caused Luke's lung to collapse. All three of the sick boys are on the mend, and Jennifer thanks you for your prayers.I receive parenting tips by e-mail from http://www.effectiveparenting.org/. These are very helpful. They are based on books by Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, who are veteran home schoolers who teach parenting seminars around the country.Colleen Braden sent this information: $50,000 scholarship to Liberty University... Offering a scholarship larger than that awarded to the winner of the most recent Miss America Pageant, a Christian apologetics ministry has announced a contest designed to encourage students to defend the Bible and its authority. The competition in "Research Paper Challenge 2007" is open to students between the ages of 14 and 21 -- and sponsor Answers in Genesis (AiG) says it hopes to help raise up the next generation of "scripturally grounded defenders" of the Christian faith. AiG president Ken Ham says science, as it is taught in most of the nation's schools, has a detrimental influence on culture. "Today's public schools are saturated with evolutionary thinking and immorality," says the popular speaker. "By showing youth the gaping holes in evolutionism and pointing to the Bible, we can help rescue this generation from doubt and purposelessness." First prize in the Challenge is a $50,000 scholarship to Liberty University, a Christian college in Lynchburg, Virginia. Details on the contest are available online at ResearchPaperChallenge2007.com. That's all for now. I'm sure I could think of lots of other things to include, but I don't want to get carried away.
Blessings,
Virginia Knowles
(P.S. It's also my 43rd birthday today, and my dad's 70th birthday!)
