amp update and guitar question

30 for $99. With shipping I'm not sure I could have ordered the tubes for
that much. So, it's being re-tubed right now.
Playing my Strat the past couple of days I noticed something that maybe I
had noticed before, but I'm not sure, and I want opinions on it. My the
volume and tone on the guitar are both turned up to 10 I get some harsh
sounding distortion even on the clean channel on the amp (using my solid
state amp last night). Like I said, I can't be entirely sure whether this
is something new or it has been there forever. But it definitely doesn't
sound pleasant. If I roll-off a little bit on either the volume or tone it
goes away. Of course, if I'm using a little bit of distortion with it and
roll-off the volume I also lose a little gain. Anyone have any idea what
is going on? Is it the gain on the pickups? Are they "out-of-phase",
whatever that means? Is it my technique (maybe it's time for me to hang it
up)? Are the pickups bad?
