Another Goodbye on the Farm

Posted by: amazinggraze <amazinggraze@...>

As my one friend put it, there are different seasons in life.  That is so true and we have seen it ebb and flow.  We have been trying to look at all we do on the farm and see what can be tweaked or changed to make things work better and smoother.  Michael has a job off the farm that takes a lot of his hours.  Then he has a full time job here on the farm.  The goodbye is to our sheep.  I cried when we got rid of the goats, yet I knew it was the right thing to do.  I will cry when my sheep go away, but I know it is the right thing to do.  We originally got 2 sheep so I could start a little spinner's flock.  We sold lots of the babies for meat and we were able to sell the fleeces as well.  However, even though they were grass fed, when you count the cost in hay for winter, etc.  We were barely breaking even with them.  Their barn is in serious need of repair and it is leaking badly.  This is better for our sheep and better for the farm right now.  I will really miss my lamb races next Spring.

Honey is still battling something in one quarter.   We get about 1/2 gallon of milk out of her a day and the calf is taking the rest.  Once we clear up that udder, we are going to quit milking this lactation.  We hate doing that, but it is not worth all the getting ready, milking and clean up for that little bit of milk.  We have heard of some who leave the calf on and it worked for them, but it did not for us.

Only by His merciful grace,
Mike & Marci
