THE HOPE CHEST HOME SCHOOL NEWS:
Extras and Announcements
April 25, 2003
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope Chest friends,
I've got another batch of "extras and announcements" for you!
  • THEME FOR JUNE/JULY HOPE CHEST ISSUE
  • WRITE ON! CREATIVE WRITING COURSE WITH GWEN SIMMONS
  • BEACH CONDO GETAWAY
  • WALK FOR LIFE SPONSORS?
  • MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY FOR PASTOR IN KENYA
  • CENTRAL FLORIDA HOME SCHOOL STUFF
Before I get to the announcements, I wanted to tell y'all another little story.  Last week, one of my younger daughters decided to tromp the neighborhood (in bare feet!) and invite folks to come to our church's Good Friday musical presentation.  This is quite a feat for her, because she's not naturally the gregarious sort.  Two neighbors actually came to the service!  She also knocked on the door of one dear lady who has lived near us for many years, but whom we've only even said hello to a few times.  (She rarely comes outdoors.)  She was SO touched that someone was friendly to her, that she came over to chat with me later that afternoon.  She also handed me some cash to spend on my children for Easter -- which was a true blessing at that moment.  I also gave her a little book that I like to keep on hand which shares the message of salvation.  I am still marvelling at God's goodness in sending my child to minister to a lonely neighbor.   There is so much more to this story than I could share here, but I want to encourage you to teach your children to reach out in friendliness!  It makes a difference!
In other news, my husband Thad will have a job interview via phone with a large corporation on Monday afternoon.  Prayers are appreciated!  We would love to have a regular full-time income again!
I am also still sending out free copies of Emilie Barnes' book Decorating Dreams on a Budget with any order of one of my own books: Common Sense Excellence, The Real Life Home School Mom, or the Learner's Journal.  E-mail me for details!
THEME FOR JUNE/JULY HOPE CHEST ISSUE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Inspired by the book review I did last month on the The Guidance Manual for the Christian Home School by David and Laurie Callahan, I've decided to devote an issue to the concept of getting guidance for home schooling and family life.  If any of you would like to share an experience where you received much needed wisdom that helped you along, please send it my way!    Have you ever prayed (perhaps in desperation?) about what to do, and felt like you heard just the right answer from God?  What was the best advice you've gotten from another home schooler?  What books have transformed your vision for home education? Tell us about it!

WRITE ON! Creative Writing Course with Gwen Simmons
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's time to enroll for the summer session of WRITE ON!  This course was created for home school students by a home school mom.  Using the students' own interests as a base, the unique method of WRITE ON! sparks enthusiasm for writing in even the most reluctant writer!   Visit the WRITE ON! website at http://www.writeonagain.com for a complete course description, parent and student testimonials, sample lessons, and information about enrollment.  Added features have called for a price increase, but HOPE CHEST subscribers may subtract $10 from the price listed on the website if enrolled by May 12.  You may email Gwen Simmons, the instructor, at [email protected] with any specific questions.
[Virginia's note: My daughter Mary took this course a few years back, and we've been quite impressed!]
WALK FOR LIFE SPONSORS?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On Saturday, May 3, our family will go on the annual Walk for Life to support the True Life Choice crisis pregnancy centers.  It's a hot sweaty two laps around Lake Eola in downtown Orlando, but always good fellowship!  Four of my daughters -- Julia, Rachel, Joanna and Lydia -- are seeking sponsors.  If you would like to donate toward a great cause, just send me your name, address and pledge amount, and TLC will bill you later.  We have participated in the ministry of True Life Choice for the past ten years, and have been so blessed with their compassionate care of women and girls in crisis.
The TLC web site is at http://www.tlcwomenscenter.org/ but the Walk for Life link on it doesn't seem to be working right now.

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY FOR PASTORS IN KENYA AND MALAWI
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After my article on mentoring appeared in Above Rubies Magazine last spring, I received letters from all over the world.   Two were from pastors in Africa.  I already told you about Johnson Malinda, the pastor, boarding school teacher, father of ten, and grandfather of three in Turbo, Kenya.  After we sent a care box to him and asked for a list of more specific needs, he sent his wish list.  (Unfortunately, with Benjamin's arrival, I have not yet gotten around to sending this out to those who requested it!  I'm sorry!) I have since heard from another dear pastor, Headson Makazinga, in Malawi.  He is in his sixties, and walks among the rural villages bringing practical and spiritual ministry to orphans, AIDS patients and many others.   I am waiting to hear back from him about some specific ways we can help him, such as how we can supply him with the appropriate language of Bibles and Christian literature for distribution.  (This is one of his most pressing needs.)  As I think about the abundance of Christian fellowship, literature and web information I enjoy here in Central Florida, my heart goes out to these men who are ministering with all they have -- which is not much materially speaking, but is everything in God's sight.  Please join me in blessing them with some much needed resources.  I am not going to type in all of the "wish list" information here, but if you are interested in participating, please e-mail me, and I will send you updated information as I receive it.
