Bracing for Frances

Posted by: homenews <homenews@...>

Dear Hope Chest friends,

It's been a crazy month of August so far, and it's fixing to get crazier just in time for September!  We're still catching up after being displaced from our house for a week after Hurricane Charley, and now Hurricane Frances is bearing down us, threatening to take dead aim at Central Florida. Here's the news link: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/weather/orl-asecfrances31083104aug31,0,6546839.story

We've already spent a good chunk of the day stocking up on more flashlights, more batteries, more water, more non-perishable foods, more... You get the picture!  If you live in this area and haven't gotten these things yet, do it now.  The shelves of Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Home Depot are emptying quickly!

I need to go back out in a little bit to tank up our van with gas and to vote in the primaries.  Our friend Grant Maloy, a local home school dad who is currently a county commissioner running for the office of Seminole County tax collector.  (His wife Althea is a long-time friend of mine!)  I can't vote in Orange County, but our friend Jim Kallenger, another home school dad who is also a current state representative, is running for county commissioner there.

So far I am scheduled, along with my daughters Joanna and Lydia, to fly north on Friday to attend the wedding of my older brother John, and his sweet young bride Dana.   Now Thad is talking about loading the whole family in the van and evacuating -- all the way to Atlantic City, New Jersey!  Hmmm...  This is when the flexibility of home schooling is so necessary.

My very elderly grandparents, who lived in Port Charlotte (devastated by Hurricane Charley) are already in the Baltimore area with my parents since they can't return to their retirement apartment for up to six months.

Ah well, enough of Florida hurricane stuff.  As you can imagine, it will be a while before I have the time to send out another Hope Chest issue!  I've still got another couple of weeks of teaching high school and middle school co-op history / literature classes, too!  (That's going great!  I'll tell you more later.)

Blessings,
Virginia Knowles
