BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD, I'D BE

But for the grace of God, I'd be
A man to earn respect by all,
Upstanding in my quality —
Before the grace of God, I fall.
Without his grace, my finest doing
Would shine above the average Joe,
My goodness for the public viewing —
But when God looks, I've naught to show.
On my own, I'd shine, I'd shine
(Deceitful clouds obscure the Sun),
All mine the credit, the glory mine —
But next to God, I've none, no, none.
