California home schooling in jeopardy

I've had several e-mails in the past couple of days about the home schooling case in California that is set to go to the state supreme court soon. HSLDA has sent out an alert, and James Dobson is interviewing Michael Farris on Focus on the Family's radio show today.

A Hope Chest reader named Kelly sent a good concise description of the situation, so I am including it here for your information. Thanks to all of you (Marlene, Amy, Melissa and Kelly) who passed along this important information, which does not just affect California, but the rest of us as well!

Dear Virginia,

I am not sure if you have heard about the homeschooling court case in the state of California. I received an e-alert message from HSLDA last night stating that Michael Farris was scheduled to talk with Dr. Dobson on Focus on the Family today about this case and the threat to homeschool freedom and parental rights. Apparently, a homeschooling family in the state of CA has been charged with child abuse. The family was not a member of HSLDA and sought their own legal counsel. A state appeals court decided California parents without teaching credentials do not have a right to homeschool their children. This case is to go to the CA Supreme Court soon!!! If the court rules in favor of this ruling homeschooling will be illegal in the state of CA. This is a huge threat to homeschooling nationwide as well as a threat to parental rights. We can help stop this threat to homeschooling and parental rights by signing an online petition to depublish this Court of Appeal opinion. The petition can be accessed at www.HSLDA.org or at the Focus on the Family website www.family.org click on social issues. Please get the word out and PRAY!!!
