Casey Goes Home: The Rest of the Story
Bishop James 'I Feel God' Brown
[email protected] Victory Church, Ft. Worth, TX

Can anyone forget their first reaction to the poem "Casey
at the Bat" by Ernest Lawrence Thayer? The 1888 verse
chronicled the exploits (or lack) of the Mighty Casey.
Casey was made for tragedy and set up for failure. Playing
on a team that was not supposed to win, believing that he
could be the victor by the force of his own will, was any
other result possible?

The poem does teach a valuable lesson, that even seemingly
heroic sports figures fail more often than they succeed. The
message is as appropriate today as it was in 1888,
when men were men, grass was real and baseballs were
covered with horsehide. It's just that now those failures
frequently have nothing to do with the conduct of the
game.

All of us know what happened to him on that day. But what
about the rest of the story? Was he able to live a good
life? Did his failure that day doom him to always be an
underachiever? What is the real truth?

There is a key that unlocks the truth of the man under the
uniform. A secret that was hidden in plain view for more
than a century, Casey was a Christian! Yes, that's right,
you heard it here first. The mighty Casey was already a
born again Christian at the time he missed the historic
strike three!

"With a smile of Christian charity great Casey's visage
shone;" That stanza holds hope for all of us who have
struggled and failed. We are not the first! Many times we
"know" that fact, but may not always "realize" what
it means.

If you have been a Christian for even a short amount of
time, you have missed the mark in some area you were sure
you had under control. All of us have experienced the
disappointment of failing where we should succeed. Isn't
that what happened to mighty Casey? He wanted to pull it
off, he wanted to be a hero, but it just didn't happen.

Even our failures are tied to our purpose. Remember, "All
things work together for the good to them that love the
Lord and are called according to His purpose". Whenever we
convince ourselves that we can finish anything in our own
strength, we are as doomed to failure as Casey. Many times
God uses these very failures to: increase our faith, give
us experience for the future, develop our character, and
give us a testimony for someone we have yet to meet.

Don't be discouraged by what you view as a failure. The
Biblical story of Joseph illustrates the importance of not
giving up following an apparent defeat. If Joseph had
given up when his brothers put him into the pit, he would
have never achieved his later success. So it is in the
life of every Christian. Troubles will come, failures will
come, but we must never quit. We are guaranteed victory!

Our Brother Casey was not a quitter either. After that
game, he went home to his wife, kids, and church family.
They loved him despite his apparent failure. As a result,
the next year he was named the Most Valuable Player as he
led the league in home runs and hits with men on base.

More importantly, to Casey, he also led a Bible study for
his teammates. There he often explained how God gave him
healing after that game in Mudville. Many gave their life
to Jesus through his witness. Later he retired and became
a coach and spiritual leader for players from 3
generations.

Strike out? Not Casey, his game had not even started.
Batter Up!
