[theory ?] Chords

I'll prepare you now, this has g****r implications, and I'll try to keep it short and sweet.

Our worship team has had the misfortune of losing our only 6 stringer. We have been trying to get a drummer, but that is a dry well, too. So now, ol mother hubbard is finding the cupboard fairly bare. Please pray that the Lord will stir a some hearts to be willing to play with our group.

Real question time. There are times I would like to fill in the music a bit more, other than just root wackin'. Which by the way, is just fine with me ;^) However, do any of you fine accomplished types play guitar chords during a song? Is this something that you would want to do when a guitar is not available? Should I just avoid this temptation?
