I used to do that all the time on my Strat and Strat-style guitars. I
would change the tension based on what style of music I was playing. If
I wanted to be able to do some real subtle tremolo stuff, I'd like less
tension, but if I wasn't going to be doing much of that stuff, or if I
knew I was only going to use more pronounced tremolo stuff, I'd tighten
them up to keep the bridge balanced.
