Hello home school friends,I am writing on behalf of my daughter Mary, who is a senior this year.First, she wants to remind high school students in the Orlando area about her Journalism club which meets about twice a month. If you are interested in this, please e-mail her (in care of me) at [email protected]. (If you already have her e-mail address, use that. I'm just not broadcasting it!) On Friday, September 24, Rick Brunson will be the guest speaker. He teaches Journalism at UCF and works part-time as an Orlando Sentinel editor. He will speak first, and then lead a discussion about a news article which he wrote. The meeting will be held from 9:00 - 11:30 AM at Metro Life Church in Casselberry. Please e-mail Mary as soon as possible if you plan to attend this meeting, since she will want to send you some information to read ahead of time.Second, Mary is applying for college. She plans to major in Journalism and will apply to the University of Florida in Gainesville, the University of Central Florida here in Orlando (my alma mater) and Stetson, a good private college about 45 minutes away from us. (Her dream school is still The King's College, a classical Christian school in New York City. www.tkc.edu) Anyway, after visiting UF and talking to an admissions counselor, she reports that there are a lot of extra hoops that she, as a home school student, has to jump through to verify her achievements, especially if she wants to get into the Honors program. This includes taking the SAT subject tests and some other things. I reminded her this morning that she is technically enrolled in a private school covering which keeps her records and will issue a diploma, and thus she could have presented herself as a private school student and maybe bypassed some of the hassles. She already has high SAT scores and a 4.0 dual enrollment GPA, and qualifies for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship. She would like additional scholarships to cover other educational expenses. At this point, she is still doing most of her own research on college admissions, which is more reliable than depending on her highly distractible Mom. Our question to those of you whose home schooled students have applied to any of these three colleges: What did you do to sucessfully achieve your admission and scholarship goals? Have the state colleges in Florida provided a rigorous academic program? Thanks for taking the time to read this. We look forward to hearing your replies.Blessings,Virginia Knowles-- To unsubscribe, send ANY message to: [email protected]
