                           "Common things for all"

  I.    Introduction

        A.  (I Cor. 10:13)  Temptations....

        B.  This mentions something that is COMMON TO MAN.

        C.  There are many things COMMON TO MAN.

        D.  We want to consider a few of them.

  II.   Things common to man

        A.  We start with our text--A COMMON TEMPTATION

            1.  All are tempted the same way
                a)  (I Jn 2:15) Lust of flesh, lust of eyes, pride of life
                b)  (Heb 4:15) Jesus was tempted in ALL POINTS LIKE AS WE ARE
                         (Matt 4:1-11) hunger--lust of flesh
                         pinnacle--cast self down--pride of life
kingdoms, their glory were shown--lust of eyes
But Jesus "hid the word in his heart" and did not sin!
We can appreciate that Jesus was tempted in ALL points too
                c)  (Gen 3:6)  The temptation of woman in the garden
She saw the fruit, good for food--lust of flesh
Pleasant to the eyes--lust of the eyes
To make one wise--pride of life
                d)  There's one thing the Devil DOESN'T LIKE...
A doctor may give us vitamins, to build up our
                         resistance to disease or infection

                         The devil CAN'T STAND RESISTANCE!
(James 4:7-8) Resist the Devil, and he'll flee from
                          you

        B.  A common SALVATION (Jude 1:3)

But how is it that salvation is COMMON to men?

            1.  All are invited to enjoy it. (Mark 16:15-16)
                a)  This gospel extends an invitation that is worldwide in
                    its scope
                b)  EVERY creature--ALL nations
                c)  (Matt 11:28) Come unto me ALL YE THAT LABOR...
                d)  (Rev. 22:17) The Spirit and the Bride say "come"...
                    "WHOSOEVER WILL" let him come...

            2.  All must DO THE SAME THING to enjoy it.

                a)  Preachers may make you think there are many different ways
                b)  EVERY CASE OF CONVERSION in the book of Acts--they all
                    DID THE VERY SAME THING!
                    (1)  They Heard the word
                    (2)  They Believed the word
                    (3)  They Obeyed the word.
--now some had already done some things, others had
already done others so they were told different things
--but all obeyed the SAME PLAN
                    (4)  (Acts 2:38) Believers asked--told "repent and be
                         baptized"
                    (5)  (Acts 8:36-9) A man who repented asked--told to
                         confess and be baptized
                    (6)  (Acts 16:30)  An unbeliever asked--told to believe
first, then told the other things
                c)  This same plan of salvation is AVAILABLE NOW
                d)  Right now you are reading the gospel--hearing can and will
                    produce faith in your heart
                e)  You likewise must DO THE SAME THING THEY DID to be saved.

        C.  A common FAITH

            1.  Listening to men, we may get the idea that there are MANY
                FAITHS acceptable to God.

            2.  As of December of last year (2002) there were catalogued in
                North America some 2000+ faiths.

            3.  (Tit 1:4) Paul wrote of the COMMON FAITH
What is there about this faith that makes it common?

            4.  There is just one of them

                a)  (Jude 1:3) Contend for THE FAITH...How many is THE FAITH?
                b)  (Eph 4:1-6) One faith...How about 2000+ ? NO!  How about
                    two...NO!  NOT EVEN TWO!
                c)  If people are telling you about MANY FAITHS they must be
                    READING THE WRONG BOOK!
                d)  We have to understand about the way "FAITH" is used in the
                    Bible...
                    (1)  Faith can mean "to believe in" (Heb 11:6) Believe
                         that He is..."
                    (2)  Faith can mean "the faith" (Gal 1:23) preached THE
                         FAITH
                    (3)  What did Paul preach? (I Cor. 15:2) The GOSPEL
The Gospel is used interchangeably here with the Faith
--Just one gospel system, just one faith
                e)  Whatever the Bible says to me it says to you and vice versa
                    (1)  An example is singing...
--He told you to do the same thing he told me to do
--we are all to sing and admonish one another, and
                           all to receive admonition
                    (2)  This is why...Singing is a "common thing"
--You see no "solo performances" here
                         --No Choirs, no "special singing"

        D.  A common CHURCH

            1.  To hear people preaching today, you would think you'd find a
different church on every page of the New Testament!

            2.  But there was just one church in the Bible
                a)  (Matt 16:18) "I will build MY CHURCH"
                    How many?  One or more?
                b)  (Eph 4:4) ONE BODY  (I Cor 12:20) ONE BODY
                    (I Cor 12:13) ONE BODY
                c)  (Col 1:24)  My body's sake which is-----THE CHURCH!

                d)  In Florence, Ala. a 3-yr-old in the audience, when I asked
"How many does that make?" in a sermon, answered as plain
as anything "one".  If a 3-yr-old can understand that,
                    surely we can.
                e)  (Rom 16:16) churches of Christ--they all were part of a
common church--all were the same kind of church

        E.  A common SAVIOR

            1.  In the mind of some, there may be many saviors, many mediators

            2.  Jesus is the savior
(Matt 1:21) Save his people from their sins
                (Lk 2:11)  Christ the Savior
(I Tim 1:15) Came to save sinners
(Heb 5:8-9) Author of et. salv. to all them that OBEY HIM

            3.  Christ gave himself for the one church

He is the savior of all the saved in exactly the same way
He is the savior of ALL the saved that ARE SAVED
All will be saved the SAME WAY by the SAME SAVIOR that are
                saved.

        F.  A common DEATH  (Ready or not, it's coming!)

            1.  (Num 16:29) Moses spoke of men who would not DIE THE COMMON
                DEATH
            2.  (James 2:24-26) Death is the separation of body and spirit
(Eccl 12:7)  The body dies, the spirit goes back to God
            3.  (Heb 9:27) Appointed for us to die
(I Cor. 15:22) In Adam, all die
(Eccl 9:5) The living know that they shall die
(Job 14:1-2) Life is fleeting, like a shadow
(Job 7:6) My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle
--cotton mills They weave cloth from cotton, and the shuttle
moves so quickly on the looms that it cannot be seen.  It
can be HEARD--it makes a lot of noise.

--talking to a 100-year-old man--he said it seemed like only
yesterday that he was just a boy.  Life is BRIEF!

        G.  A common RESURRECTION

            1.  All will be raised at the SAME TIME (John 5:28-29)
ALL that are in the graves...How many is that?  ALL!

            2.  They believed there shall be A resurrection from the dead
                (Acts 24:15)  A resurrection...
--A resurrection...How many is that?  A...means only ONE

        H.  A common JUDGMENT

            1.  All people will be there

                a)  In a lesson "The Greatest Things about the Greatest Day"
                    --The greatest crowd--
                b)  (II Cor. 5:10) ALL shall appear...
                c)  (Rom 14:12)  Each one...
                d)  (Rev. 21:12-14)  Small and Great--that will be EVERYBODY
                e)  We will all be there, you and I.

            2.  All will be judged by the SAME JUDGE

                a)  (John 5:22) All judgment committed to the Son
                b)  (Rom 2:16) He will judge the secrets of men
                    (According to Jesus Christ)
                c)  This judge will be just, fair, and knows us
He helped to CREATE us, surely He KNOWS us!

            3.  All judged by the SAME STANDARD

                a)  (John 12:48) The word of Christ
                b)  (Rom 2:16) By the gospel
                c)  (Rev 21:12-16) The books were opened
--the Bible is a library of books, 27 in new, 39 in old
66 books in all--the books will be opened
                d)  If we aren't ready to face the books then, what will we
                    do?

            4.  If on that day we are unprepared, we will have to say, "I had
an opportunity to believe it and obey it once and I MISSED IT

                THINK ABOUT THAT!

  III.  Conclusion

        A.  We've looked at some things that are COMMON to Man

        B.  Why don't you prepare for the COMMON JUDGMENT?

        C.  Come now !
