June 18th Fathers Day God's Rules
Ephesians 6:1-4 "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise), "that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." ESV
- Kids, obey your parents
- Maybe the way to better parents is to be better kids
i. I was not always the best kid around
- Through God, my parents brought me into this world
- They cleaned me, fed me, took care of me
- They made sure I went to school, to the doctor, and, as best they could, had more than I needed!
- Maybe I should have been more obedient and respectful
i. It is the RIGHT thing to do
ii. Honor them
iii. Respect them
iv. Obey them
- Makes your life easier
- Gives you longer life
- "The put you in this world, they can take you out!"
- This is the WILL OF GOD for you
i. Disobedience is sin
ii. Talking SMACK about your parentals is SIN
iii. Rebellion is sin
- Dads rules may sometimes seem harsh, weird or unnecessary
- But they have purpose
i. They try to keep you safe
ii. They try to build character
iii. They try to build submission and service
iv. The rules are for your own good
- But we don't see that
- We want OUR WAY
- We rebel against our Dads Will
- No matter how much he is trying to help us
- And we usually end up in trouble
- We get hurt
- We make mistakes
i. Some short term
ii. Some last longer
- Funny how the older we get the wiser our parentals become
- Reality, being all that reality is, teaches us that we are all like this
- We like to learn the hard way for some reason
i. We touch the hot stove
ii. We suffer the consequences
- We hear God's Rules but do not follow them
i. We THINK we know better
ii. We rebel against God
iii. We touch the hot stove
- For no GOOD reason except we want to what we are told not to do
iv. We PURPOSEFULLY do what we are told not to do by our father
v. We suffer the consequences
- Punishment
- Problems
- Pain
- Until we take those problems to God, our HEAVENLY FATHER
i. He forgives
ii. He restores He heals
- 1 John 1:5-10 "This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." ESV
- It is funny how the older we get the WISER God becomes to us
- PLEASE turn to God while you are young
- The rest will probably not be included after a Sunday Morning Re-Write
- Dad's have responsibilities as well
- The GOOD DAD
i. Disciplines their children
ii. Teaches their children
- Trades
- Crafts
- Hobbies
- FAITH
- The church is not primarily responsible for teaching your kids!
i. YOU ARE
iii. DO NOT Provoke your children to anger
- Keep YOUR Cool
- Understand
- Listen
- Correct unacceptable behavior
- Don't try to beat it out of them
iv. The GOOD DAD is TOUGH but FAIR
v. The GOOD DAD LISTENS and LOVES and DOESN'T LEAVE
- Dads are absolutely necessary in our families today
- BE THERE
- Your place is at home
i. Not in the bars
ii. Not running around till all hours
- Sure, enjoy your hobbies
i. IF possible take your kids and wife!
- All of this is a reflection of how we should be with God
- Honor Him
- Respect Him
- Obey Him
- Our ABBA is the ULTIMATE GOOD FATHER
- Christians are His children
i. We have that right
- Yes, sometimes He disciplines us
i. To correct our behavior and call us to Himself
- Yes, He teaches us
i. Teaches
ii. Gifts us with skills, talents and abilities
- He LOVES us!
i. Completely and Totally
ii. He is COMMITTED to us
- FOREVER
- Never will He abandon us
iii. He is TOUGH but FAIR
iv. He LISTENS and LOVES and DOESN'T LEAVE
- He is the MODEL FATHER we should seek to be
