Dana/birds

Hi Dana,
If you are looking for a smaller parrot, that is generally quiet and is
quite pretty, a Senegal Parrot is something to start with. They are easy to
care for and are one of the cheaper parrots and start around $250-$300.
Most parrots need to be handled alot. Senegals are usually "one person"
birds. There are also the smaller conures if you don't mind some noise. Any
of the conure species are friendly, social, and very comical (where Senegals
are "usually" more calm). If you have ever seen the movie Polly, the main
bird in there was a Blue Crowned Conure. They usually run around $350-$500.
A bit of advice tho, basically choose a bird that matches your lifestyle. If
you love to snuggle, a cockatoo is a good choice but are quite pricey
($2000)... If you love to laugh and don't mind getting a good bite once in
awhile, an Amazon is a good choice, if you just want something the kids can
handle, maybe go with a smaller bird like a cockatiel, lovebird, budgie, or
parrolett (all excellent talkers too)....I could go on and on about birds 🙂
LOL. Basically tho, a bird is going to live a very long time, depending on
the breed you choose, they can live around 100 years or so, so they are a
lifetime commitment. They need a clean cage ( I spend around 2-3 hours every
day cleaning cages), and more than anything, they need tons of love and
handling to make thier lives joyful. Oh, and if you get a larger parrot,
watch your woodwork! Mine are great carpenters! 🙁
Oh, and never feed a bird just seeds, they need fresh fruits and vegies
everyday and feed them pellets made for birds. Even our little budgies are
big fruit and vegie eaters and love their pellets much more than their
seeds.
Let me know if you get a bird and what kind it is, I probably have one, and
am always willing (twist my arm!) to talk about birds.
