Deacon should be servants

Posted by: dpowellaz <dpowellaz@...>

I agree with you George, but many a pastor has been greatly harmed by deacons who view their ministry not as a servant but as an overseer which they are not.  If a deacon will be a deacon he is invaluable but when a deacon sees himself no longer as a servant then he become a liability to both the undershepherd and the church!  I don't believe that it speaks anywhere in the scriptures of the office of deacon as being a training ground for another position.  We are all called to be evangelists!  Matt 28:18-20!

Comments about Deacons can soon become fixed as 'us' and 'them'  and we
should realise that we all serve the same Christ.  Deacons are servants and
so are Pastors.  Both Philip and Steven started as deacons and from their
God used then as evangelists.  Deacon is a training office as well as an
office of servant.     Before we ordain we should give responsibility to a
potential deacon and let him prove his worth.  22  Do not ordain anyone
hastily, and do not participate in the sins of others;  Paul give a
guidelines that if followed would solve a lot of problems.  (1 Tim 3:8 NRSV)
Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not indulging in much
wine, not greedy for money   (1 Tim 3:9 NRSV)  they must hold fast to the
mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.(1 Tim 3:10 NRSV)  And let them
first be tested; then, if they prove themselves blameless, let them serve as
deacons.

A good deacon has great worth in support of the Pastors and many of use
would not be near as affective without their skills and support.

It is a Pastors job to initiate and maintain a good working relationship
with those who are helping him to serve God's people.

Love in Christ, Pastor George
