Jonathan as a "type" of Jesus Christ

(I Samuel 20:1-42)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on the contents of this chapter

            1.  David told Jonathan of Saul's intent to kill him, but Jonathan didn't

want to believe that awful truth about his father, vv. 1-4.

            2.  David and Jonathan planned to discover King Saul's true intentions

about David by observing Saul's reactions to David's absence at a

3-day festival in the palace; they determined to meet secretly later to

confer about the matter, vv. 5-24.

            3.  On the second day of the feast, Saul asked Jonathan where David

was; when Jonathan revealed that he had given David permission to

visit his family in Bethlehem, Saul became infuriated; he proclaimed

that David must die, and he threw a spear at Jonathan, vv. 25-33.

            4.  According to their prior arrangement, Jonathan met David secretly,

and they wept as they renewed their pledges of love and loyalty to one

another; Jonathan returned to the city, and David departed to begin a

10-year period of exile, living as a hunted outlaw, vv. 34-42.

II.  Meditation and Revelation:  on Jonathan's service for David as a "type" of Christ

            1.  He became one in spirit with him, I Samuel 18:1.

            2.  He loved him as he loved his own soul, 18:1.

            3.  He made a blood covenant with him, 18:3, and renewed it, 20:16-17, 41.

            4.  He gave him valuable royal gifts, 18:4.

            5.  He interceded for him with his father, 19:4-5.

            6.  He brought reconciliation, 19:6-7.

            7.  He promised:  "Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you," 20:4.

            8.  He took his father's wrath upon himself, 20:30-33.

            9.  He provided a way of escape, 20:42.

          10.  He helped him find spiritual strength, 23:16.

III.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  Bond spiritually with my fellow believers in a sacred covenant of mutual

     love and respect.

            2.  Pray for my brothers and sisters in Christ, interceding with the Father for

His blessings of grace and mercy upon them.

            3.  Sacrificially serve other persons who are in need, with a spirit of genuine

     humility and submission.

            4.  Compassionately give of myself to assist and spiritually strengthen the

lives of my friends and neighbors in the name of the Lord.

why prayers go unanswered

(James 4:1-17)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on "heart" sins which hinder effective prayer

            1.  Desires for pleasure, v. 1.

            2.  Unfulfilled lusts, v. 2.

            3.  Murder (malicious hatred), v. 2.

            4.  Covetousness, v. 2.

II.  Meditation:  on why some prayers go unanswered

(By "unanswered" we mean that God answers by saying "NO")

            1.  Because they are made with a wrong motivation ("amiss") v. 3.

            2.  Because they are made selfishly, v. 3.

            3.  Because they are made by believers who are unfaithful to God

(adulterers and adulteresses); who are "friendly" toward the world's

system, but who are enemies of God, v. 4.

            4.  Because they are made with pride rather than with humility, v. 6.

III.  Revelation:  on how to pray and receive "yes" answers from God

            1.  Submit to God and resist the devil, v. 7.

            2.  Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you, v. 8.

            3.  In repentance, receive God's forgiveness and cleansing, vv. 8-9.

            4.  Humble yourselves in the sight of God, and He will lift you up,

     vv. 10, 16.

5.  Do not speak evil of other persons, nor judge (condemn) fellow

     believers, vv. 11-12.

6.  Recognize that God controls the future; do not presume that

you'll even be alive tomorrow, vv. 13-14.

7.  Seek for and pray that the Lord's will be done in every situation

and circumstance of your life, v. 5.

8.  Avoid the pernicious sin of omission . . . knowing that you should

do good, but too lazy to actually do it, v. 17.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  Avoid the worldly sins of the flesh, which hinder my prayers from

                 being answered, Isaiah 59:2.

            2.  Make sure my motivation in prayer is pure; love for God and love

for persons in need . . . not selfishness nor pride.

            3.  Draw near to God daily (Bible study, prayer, meditation), in

repentance and humble submission to His will.

            4.  Watch my mouth! . . . making sure that what I piously ask for in

prayer to God is not contradicted and negated by my ungodly

speech and actions toward other persons.
