Absolam avenges the rape of his sister
(II Samuel 13:1-39)
Dr. Curt Scarborough
I. Concentration: on the contents of this chapter
1. Amnon, David's oldest son, lusted after his half-sister, Tamar,
who was Absalom's sister; Amnon's cousin, Jonadab, advised
him to pretend illness and to take her when she can into his
bedroom to tend to him; when Amnon got alone with Tamar,
he raped her, vv. 1-14.
2. Amnon then threw Tamar out, and she went into mourning;
Absalom discovered the problem and with malicious hatred
refused to speak to Amnon; David became angry, but took
no action, vv. 15-22.
3. Two years later, Absalom ordered his servants to assassinate
Amnon during a sheep shearing celebration when all the princes
were present; all the king's sons fled when Amnon was killed,
but Jonadab told David not to worry because the rest of his
sons were safe, vv. 23-33.
4. Absalom fled into exile to the home of his maternal grandfather,
Talmai, where he stayed for three years; David mourned over
Amnon, but he longed to see Absalom, vv. 34-39.
II. Meditation: on the sinful characters in this chapter
1. Amnon was consumed with lust; this resulted in rape and incest.
2. Jonadab, the evil, deceitful plotter, encouraged Amnon to sin;
later this sneaky Jonadab sided with Absalom and advised Kiing
David.
3. David became angry over Amnon's rape of Tamar, but he took
no disciplinary action against him. (See Leviticus 20:17).
4. Absalom refused to speak to Amnon for two years; he held on
to bitter resentment and secretly plotted murderous revenge.
III. Revelation: on the spiritual implications to be drawn here
1. Like father, like son; Amnon allowed lust to escalate into gross
sexual immorality. (However, Amnon, unlike David, never
repented).
2. Satan often places treacherous persons, like Jonadab, behind the
scenes to prod persons into sinning against God.
3. Over-indulgent David failed his sons by not exercising "tough love."
4. Absalom, also like his father David, plotted vile murder to solve a
problem. (However, Absalom exemplified seething resentment and
malicious hatred over a long period of time, while David sinned
impetuously and humbly repented soon after his transgressions
were exposed.)
