david reveals the kind heart of god
(II Samuel 9:1-13)
Dr. Curt Scarborough
I. Concentration: on the contents of this chapter
1. David inquired whether there were any survivors from the house of
Saul, because he wanted to show kindness for the sake of his dead
friend, Jonathan, v. 1.
2. David called Ziba, who served as the steward over the lands originally
owned by King Saul in Gilbeah; Ziba told David about Jonathan's
lame son, Mephibosheth, who lived under the care of Machir in Lo
Debar, vv. 2-4; II Samuel 4:4.
3. David brought the boy into his presence and reassured him; he gave
him his rightful inheritance and commanded Ziba and his family to
continue working as servants of the young grandson of King Saul;
Ziba submitted to David's orders, vv. 5-11.
4. Mephibosheth was moved into David's palace in Jerusalem, where
he was treated with dignity and respect, just like one of the sons of
King David, vv. 11-13.
II. Meditation: on David's treatment of Mephibosheth
1. David treated the young man with kindness, in fulfillment of the
covenant he had made with Jonathan, vv. 1, 3; I Samuel 20:12-17.
2. David's actions were designed to show the love and mercy of God,
v. 3.
3. David's favor was extended to one who was totally helpless,
completely dependent, and probably physically unattractive,
vv. 3, 13.
4. David noted the young man's fear and low self-esteem, v. 8;
David elevated him to royal status and granted him a generous
inheritance, vv. 7, 10.
III. Revelation: on David as a type of the Messiah (the Son of David)
1. Jesus Christ shows believers kindness on the basis of the New
Covenant in His blood, Hebrews 12:24.
2. Jesus Christ reveals the heart and character of God the Father to
His disciples, John 14:9.
3. Jesus Christ extends His grace and mercy to unworthy and sinful
people, Matthew 9:12-13.
4. Through Jesus Christ, God the Father elevates believers to sit in
the heavenly places with Him, Ephesians 2:4-7.
IV. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Rejoice that I am a part of God's chosen covenant people through
the atoning work of Christ.
2. Exhibit the compassionate character of the Lord by the way I treat
other unlovely people.
3. Thank the Lord Jesus for His unfailing mercy and amazing grace
extended to me.
4. Enjoy the spiritual blessings which are my inheritance as a member
of God's royal family . . . "I'M A CHILD OF THE KING!"
