THE HOPE CHEST HOME SCHOOL NEWS:
Extras and Announcements
February 9, 2003
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Hope Chest friends!
It's really rainy here, and we were late for church, and I had to come home during the sermon for one of my younger children to change clothes, BUT it's been a GREAT DAY!  I've seen so many blessings in my day, and have been encouraged by my Aunt Nancy to notice LITTLE things with thankfulness.
So here are a few things I'm thankful for today:  My eight children were wonderfully behaved during church.  It was such a joy to see them sit so sweetly, from the just-turned-two-year-old on my lap, to the lovely teens at the other end of the row.   The music was wonderful, and the sermon (what I heard of it before I had to go home with the wet child!) was filled with God's Word.  The two of us who came home got to sneak a snack of leftover birthday cake and Coke (rare around our house).  My husband, Thad, made a huge pot of homemade chicken soup yesterday and popped it in the oven this morning before we left for church, and I added in a loaf of homemade rye bread (a gift from a baking friend) so we had a yummy hot lunch waiting for us when we got home again.   Thad also made a big batch of lasagna, so dinner is all ready to heat up, too!  While I was putting the preschoolers down for their nap in the afternoon, Thad read to the other children 48 verses from Psalm 119, and no one fussed!   And, best of all, my dear sweet mother, Mary Quarrier, is arriving from Maryland in a couple of hours!  She's driving down to help with baby Benjamin, who is due soon.
My midwives have scheduled an induction for this Thursday morning at Florida Hospital South, if baby doesn't decide to come before then.  I'm planning on an epidural this time around, as I'm getting wimpy in my old age.  Say a prayer for us that all will go smoothly!    I'll keep you posted on Benjamin's birth, and what we finally decide for a middle name!
The next regular Hope Chest Home School News will come out near the end of March.  The theme is The Creative Family, so send in your tidbits and ideas!  I will also be reviewing The Guidance Manual for the Christian Home School, which is a helpful book for high school by David and Laurie Callihan.
Meanwhile, I have a few miscellaneous home school announcements for y'all, which I have included below:
AN ENCOURAGING NOTE FROM A HOPE CHEST READER
I love to get notes from Hope Chest readers, and thought I'd share this one with you.  The books Wendy mentions are: The Real Life Home School Mom (http://www.hopechest.homestead.com/reallife.html
and Common Sense Excellence: Faith-Filled Home Education for Preschool to 5th Grade  http://www.hopechest.homestead.com/cse.html).
Dear Virginia,
I just wanted to let you know that I have had plenty of time lately to read your books. We've all been sick so I've sort of had a break. They were exactly what I needed! I haven't finished either of them, but read most of the "Mom" one and will finish it soon. I also read a lot of the yellow one and they are fabulous! So much of what I needed to hear and be reminded of. I feel like I can continue this journey with joy now! Thanks so much for sharing your heart and time. It is wonderful and such an encouragement. I feel like we've been chatting over a nice warm mug of cocoa.
Blessings on you and your family,
Wendy
MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY FOR PASTOR IN KENYA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After my article on mentoring appeared in Above Rubies Magazine last spring, I received letters from all over the world.  One was from Johnson Malinda, a pastor, boarding school teacher and father of ten, and grandfather of three in the town of Turbo, Kenya.   This is a very impoverished area with high unemployment.  The Malinda home has no running water, electricity, phone or television.  They receive their world news via a dry cell radio.   Our family took the opportunity to send a care box to their family, which after a couple of months in transit, arrived just in time for Christmas.  Pastor Malinda recently sent me another letter, and on my request, enclosed a wish list of needs for his family, school and church.  If you are interested in participating by sending a care box or a donation, please let me know, and I will send you more specific information in a few weeks.  I will forewarn you that it is rather expensive to ship items to Kenya.  You can check out rates for various weights at the United States Postal Service web site.

FLORIDA HOME SCHOOLERS HSLDA LEGISLATIVE E-LERT

Many Florida home schoolers have already the HSLDA e-lert concerning the proposed raising of the compulsory attendance age, so I won't repeat it here.  But for those who haven't, here's the link for updates on H.B. 9:
