Fact or..... Truth?

Posted by: bneumann848 <bneumann848@...>

So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed
in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance
with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the
Truth will set you free.  John 8:31-32

Ever notice Jesus did not say, You
will know the facts, and the facts will set you free? That is because fact and
truth are not exactly the same. Facts are relative (constantly changing); truth
is constant. Facts are based on earth’s kingdom; truth is based on heaven’s
kingdom. Let me give you some examples from scripture.

1 Samuel 17 – Israel’s army saw the fact of
a powerful enemy; David saw the truth of a covenant God.

1 Kings 17 - The widow saw the fact of one
last meal; Elijah saw the truth of God’s provision.

2 Kings 6 – Gehazi saw the fact of an approaching
army; Elisha saw the truth of the angelic host.

Matthew 14 – The disciples saw the fact of
not enough food; Jesus saw the truth of the blessing of multiplication.

John 8 – The scribes and Pharisees saw the
fact of a guilty woman; Jesus saw the truth of amazing grace.

John 11 - The mourners saw the fact of a
dead body; Jesus saw the truth of resurrection life.

Truth will never conform itself to facts,
but facts will conform themselves to truth when commanded to do so through
faith. Faith doesn’t deny the facts; it merely sees a greater or higher
reality. If I am fighting a battle in my body, those symptoms are fact. The
truth is that by the blood of Jesus I was healed at the cross (Isaiah 53:5; 1
Peter 2:24). If finances are the battle, that’s merely a fact. The truth is
that God will supply all my needs according to His riches (Philippians 4:19). I
must lay hold of that truth and refuse to let it go, just like the Canaanite
woman in Matthew 15, the widow woman in Luke 18, and the woman with the issue
of blood in Matthew 9. (I could comment on tenacious women, but won’t.)

Father, please help us to not get so
focused on facts that we lose sight of the Truth. May we hold fast to and speak
out the Truth until facts fall into proper order.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
