by J. Randal MathenyMy family, farmers all, watched sky
And clouds for signs of wind and rain.
On weather's changes they were not shy
To speak, safe topic for men so plain.The studied gauge was a precious tool,
The mark of failure or success;
None thought of weather as kind or cruel,
The clouds were not to curse nor bless.They labored after Adam's toil,
With aching backs and calloused hands,
Under their nails reluctant soil
>From furrowed fields and harrowed lands.The season's turn, by honest sweat,
Became their life, their honored brow;
And though they'd leave behind the plow,
The earth and sky they'd not forget.1. Share your thoughts with us! Click "Reply,"
