Correct Xcode install for doing both iPhone and mac development

Need to become a member of Apple iPhone Dev Center. Not sure of the present
criteria, but previously (at least for UK members) needed to complete a
form, pay an annual fee of USD 99, and be "vetted" which amounted to various
identity checks, followed by hopeful approval by Apple, at which point
access is granted to the relevant portions of the Apple iPhone Dev Center
website where the iPhone SDK is downloadable.

The downloadable file is a full Xcode and iPhone SDK in one. You can install
it and it is not important if you already have Xcode installed or not as it
will upgrade the relevant files. Consequently, the existing Xcode will be
upgraded to the version included in the iPhone SDK.

At the time of writing, the latest version is iPhone SDK is 3.1.2 but is
available bundled either with Xcode 3.2.1 for Snow Leopard or Xcode 3.1.4
for Leopard. Links to download are in the iPhone Dev Center.

Not necessary.

Correct, and fortunately one does not interfere with the other.
