My husband is leaving for Cape Town, South Africa this Friday.  He does child evangelism through a wonderful sports program called Upward Basketball.  http://www.Upward.com   He is going there to set up outreaches for next summer.    Here is a cool children’s ministry in South Africa.  http://www.mylesbing.com  We have Myles come in once a year to lead children’s praise and worship at a family camp.  He spends a couple of weeks here and does other things as well.  ~~ Elizabeth Loop in Texas

Hello again Virginia. I want to thank you for putting the note out about the 13 year old needing a family. She did find a family who are excited to adopt her. Please let your readers know how wonderful they are and that all theirs prayers helped this girl find her family. God Bless them all! and you too!!  ~~ Thanks Dixie Hilstead

My mother-in-law told me that the nine Russian orphan siblings are being adopted together by an Orlando family.  I don't know any other details, except that they had to return to Russia for three months for the adoption to proceed.  ~~ Virginia

For those who prayed for Hannah Hunter, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor back in December 2000, her mom Laura says she is doing very well!  ~~ Virginia

Science Curriculum Feedback

I highly second the endorsement of Home Training Tools. I have been teaching homeschool science classes for over 5 years and have dealt with them and have had nothing but the most punctual, friendly service available. I wish all businesses were that easy to deal with. A work about Apologia,  please be aware that if you use Apologia for biology that there is no human anatomy and physiology in the first year. You must do two years of biology to get human anatomy & physiology.  I know for some this is not a concern but it is something that you should be aware of . A Beka biology, while a daunting book at 600+ pages, does cover all aspects of biology in one year and is very thorough. Just a heads up for those that may not know what should be included in a biology course. Blessings, Pam Tisdale [Virginia's note: The weekly class where Julia is taking biology is using Body by Design for the Anatomy component.  It is very rigorous.  You can find it at http://www.newleafpress.net ]

Hi Virginia!  Home Training Tools refused to sell my family chemicals even after we jumped thru their hoops so they lost our business.  The problem was we needed a curriculum and the book my husband was using from his personal library was unfamiliar to them.  If you know of anyone that has a problem obtaining chemicals we have found someone who sells them at good prices as well as lab ware.  ~Annette [email protected]

Dear Virginia,
        I highly recommend "Science for Jesus" for ages 6-12.  I've had the privilege of being a tester this summer for their Botany study and it is wonderful!  Jeannie Fulbright loves the Lord and homeschooling moms and has written a curriculum that both praises God and teaches scientific concepts in a creative and memorable way.  Her projects are different than any I've seen before and really bring the studies alive.  Best of all, the projects use inexpensive, easy to find materials.  I've enclosed their link if anyone is interested in finding out more or ordering.
Blessings, Jennifer Polk http://www.scienceforjesus.com/index.html  [Virginia's note: The web site says that this is Charlotte Mason style science for elementary ages.  I've got to check this out!]

INTELLIGENT DESIGN SEMINAR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Saturday October 25 the Northland Faith and Science Study Group (Intelligent Design Consortium) will be conducting a one day Intelligent Design Seminar in Central Florida. We figured that many homeschoolers will want to bring their older children. Speakers will be Michael Behe and Walter Bradley, two nationally preeminent scientists in the field.  I do feel it would be appropriate only for advanced middle school and high school students. If you have any links to people or groups who might be interested in attending, please forward this site to them. http://www.sciencespeaks.com/  I have been associated with this group for two years and could not be more impressed with the variety of exceptional professionals it has given me
access to.  ~~ Stan Hahn  [email protected] [Virginia's note: Stan was in a writer's class with me many years ago.  He is the author of Lessons in the Tall Grasses, a creationist novel set in India which would be a great resource for middle and high school students.  I can't pesonally vouch for the perspective of the conference, but it should be interesting!]
CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From Thad's cousin Debbie:

CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARS - Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular. During August 2003 Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history.  The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.  The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.  Mars will be easy to spot.  At the beginning of August 2003 Mars will rise in the east at 10 P.M.  and reach its azimuth at about 3 A.M.  But by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 A.M.  That's pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has seen in recorded history.  So mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.  Share with your children and grandchildren. No one alive today will ever see this phenomenon again.
