The flesh hates everything about God. Since it resists everything about God, it resists every way we try to taste Him and know Him and love Him. And the more something enables us to find God and feast on Him, the more violently the flesh fights against it. It takes its battle to every quarter of the soul: When the mind wants to know God, the flesh imposes ignorance, darkness, error and trivial thoughts. The will can't move toward God without feeling the weight of stubbornness holding it back. And the affections, longing to long for God, are constantly fighting the infection of sensuality or the disease of indifference.

My friend Taraleigh posted this link on Facebook and I'm glad she did.  You can get a free copy of Paul Miller's book The Praying Life on Kindle today.  If you don't have a Kindle device, you can download the Kindle program onto any computer, iPhone, Blackberry, iPod, etc.  I have it on my computer and my iPod.  I set the font to large on my iPod and it's very easy to read -- even easier than a printed book.

Anyway, back to the book.  I've heard it recommended many times before, and yesterday one of our pastors, Dave Abney, quoted it in his sermon on the Lord's Prayer.  So this is very timely for me!  I'm already about a quarter of the way through it.  It's been a tough day for me so far, but I'm feeling much more encouraged to just take it to God after reading words like,
 

"Jesus does not say, "Come to me, all you who have learned how to concentrate in prayer, whose minds no longer wander, and I will give you rest."  No, Jesus opens his arms to his needy children and says, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, NASB).  The criteria for coming to Jesus is weariness.  Come overwhelmed with life.  Come with your wandering mind.  Come messy.  What does it feel like to be weary?  You have trouble concentrating.  The problems of the day are like claws in your brain.  You feel pummeled by life.  What does heavy-laden feel like?  Same thing.  You have so many problems you don't even know where to start.  You can't do life on your own anymore.  Jesus wants you to come to him that way!  Your weariness drives you to him.  Don't try to get the prayer right; just tell God where you are and what's on your mind."
