Free upgrade to Windows 10 presents a Catch 22 for me

Posted by: ccmag <ccmag@...>

Greetings,

With the recent posts ref free upgrade to Windows10 it started me to thinking. I have a machine that would probably benefit from this upgrade as it is presently running Vista. The main thing about this machine is Photoshop CS6 and a Epson scanner. The scanner is long in the tooth but it is a very good scanner (Epson Perfection 1640su Photo) and I don't plan on buying a new one.
I contacted Epson and sad to say this scanner's software will not be able to handle a 64 bit operating system. They did advise, however, that a company at Hamrick.com has software that would make the scanner compatible with Windows 10. They have a "standard" version for $60 and a "pro" version for about $100.
So while the Windows 10 upgrade wouldn't cost me anything the new scanner software would, therefore the Catch 22  ;-(
Long and short, if I want to run the scanner on a 64 bit operating system like Windows 10, then I will need to cough up $60 to $100.
Windows 10 doesn't seem so "free" any more. Life's little problems.
Regards,
Buck
