FROM FEEBLE FAITH
by J. Randal Matheny (c) 2013

Not every day does victory raise a shout,
Not every Liar's trial is made a rout,
The tares of doubt spring up among the grain,
Or conquered vice returns to haunt again.

Defeat comes oft enough and puts to flight,
One's house begets a traitor in public sight;
The eye looks over the wall for lost desire,
To hide one sin the hands with others conspire.

In many ways we stumble, soon we err,
We lapse to act the worldly men we were;
The turning path to God is lined with tears,
Where souls have higher climbed for turbulent years.

A thousand twists and times are Torment's pull,
Of good intent are hell's compartments full.
For heaven's way, a single path is laid:
To do God's will in Christ, with holy aid.

Repentance, prayer, confession — these are tools,
To launch us back to living as heaven's fools;
This movement, then, is ours from God to bless,
>From feeble faith to fullest faithfulness.
