I play Fender nickel strings on my fender J. I roll the tone nob completely off and run my neck pickup at about 80% and my bridge pickup at full. I think the strings are completely playable and sound pretty darn good.
I've never tried the Blue Steel...a bit out of my price range.
I play Blue Steels on my Fender. I love the tone of my bass overall but I am not very satisfied with its playability…it seems like every bass I have picked up besides mine (from the Dean to Rouges to you name it) has a much more playable string tension than mine does…but maybe my strings are too heavy/too light. It just seems too hard to fret on mine compared to others. Any thoughts?
I like the brightness of the Blue Steel because if I want a sound with less hi-fi I can roll off the tone knob and I still get "the beef". Sometimes I roll the tone completely off or down to like 15%. I've tried two or three brands of strings (I think Earnie Ball's and DR's but don't remember which ones) but I don't think I've ever tried a light string
So on my Fender MIM 4, what gauge string will make for lighter tension and better playability without losing the tone?
