by J. Randal MathenyAlters the sky, from hour to hour,
now angry and red, now agate, now clear,
by gentle langour, by jumps and leaps.
This fickle dome holds faith for none
while cloud and sun clash their shields.A shadow crawls to shake my faith;
falls a fog upon my face.
My soul despairs of saving grace.
In dankest deeps of hellish darkness
breaks the sudden breath of God.--

ALTERS THE SKY

Alters the sky, from hour to hour,
now angry and red, now agate, now clear,
by gentle langour, by jumps and leaps.
This fickle dome holds faith for none
while cloud and sun clash their shields.
A shadow crawls to shake my faith;
falls a fog upon my face.
My soul despairs of saving grace.
In dankest deeps of hellish darkness
breaks the sudden breath of God.
