Give Up These Things!?

Proverbs 27:7, “The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but
to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.”

Those who have not truly been born again will often
ask one who has been, “How can you give up _______?”
Fill in the blank with any one or any number of sinful
pleasures.  The person asking this question usually does
not realize that the sinful things drop off naturally –
supernaturally when a person is born again.  This is
because of the change of desires, a change in the moral
nature, and because this one is no longer looking for
something to satisfy the inner cravings of the soul.
He is now full, satisfied with Heavenly fare.

When one has eaten far more than enough at the dinner
table and feels FULL, the physical appetite normally
vanishes.  At such a time, one's favorite dessert loses
its appeal.  So it is with the spiritual realm.  Once a
soul is really full from feasting on the riches of God's
grace, the best of the Devil's sinful delicacies seems
repulsive.

The question we need to answer is not, “How could a
person ever give up these things?” but rather, “Will the
individual give God a chance to prove that He can change
his desires and satisfy his deep soul hunger?”

On the other side of this issue, the soul that is hungry,
or devoid of spiritual nourishment, is a slave to his appetite
for sinful things.  To such a one even the worst that the Devil
has to offer may become appealing. The worst case is when one,
who has “tasted of the heavenly gift,” turns back to the “weak
and beggarly elements” of the world, because he failed to
continue to dine at the Lord's table, and was more easily enticed
by temptation to sin.

“Come and dine!” the Master calleth!

Yours In Christ,
