God Has Promised

I.        Characteristics of Divine Promises

 

A.      Unfailing

I Kin 8:56 - Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that he promised.  There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised through His servant Moses.

B.      Assured by divine ability

 

Rom 4:21  ...And being fully convinced that what he had promised He was able to perform.

C.      Grounded in Christ

 

2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

2 Cor 7:1 Therefore having these promises, Beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and          spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

D.      Of infinite value

 

2 Pet 1:4  By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature.

E.      Culminate in everlasting life

 

1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

II.       Divine Promises to the Afflicted:

 

A.      Brighter Days

 

Ps. 30:5 Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

B.      Deliverance

 

Ps. 34: 19-20 many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.  He guards all his bones; not one of them is broken.

C.      Divine care in sickness.

 

Ps. 41:3 The Lord will strengthen the sick; He will sustain him on his sickbed.

Ps. 50:15 Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.

Ps.  94: 12-13 Blessed is the man whom you instruct, O Lord, and teach out of your law, that you may give him rest from the days of adversity.

Ps 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you will revive me.  You will stretch out your hand against my enemies and your right hand will save me.

D.      Comfort of God’s Presence:

 

Is 43:2 When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you.  When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown!  When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up, the flames will not consume you.  For I am the Lord your God, your Savior, the Holy One of Israel.

E.      An eternal home:

 

John 14:1-2  Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you.  

F.       All things work for the believer’s good

 

Rom 8:28  We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

2 Cor 4:17  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

G.      Sufficiency of Divine Grace:

 

2 Cor 12:9  Jesus said My Grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

H.      Fellowship in Christ’s Sufferings:

    

I Pet 4:12-13  Beloved do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you, but to rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.

I.        Membership in the company of the redeemed:

                                                 

Rev 7:13-14  Then one of the elders answered, saying to me,

“Who are these arrayed in white robes and where do they come

from?”   And I said to him, “Sir, you know.”  So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

J.       Final Deliverance from Sorrow and Pain:

 

Rev 21:4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no death, nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

III:  Divine promises to believers:

A.      Bodily Supplies:

 

Ps. 37:3  Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.

B.      Unlimited Blessing:

 

Mk. 9:23  Jesus said “If you can believe, All things are possible to him that believes.”

C.      Answers to prayer:

 

Mk. 11:24  Jesus said “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you will receive them, and you will have them.”

D.      Removal of obstacles:

Lk. 17:6  If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea’, and it would obey you.

E.      Divine Sonship

 

John 1:12 But as many as receive Him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.

F.      Eternal Life:  (Jesus said)

 

Jn. 3-14-15 “...That whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

G.      Spiritual fullness:

 

John 6:35  Jesus said  “I am the bread of life.  He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall not thirst.”

Jn 11:26  Jesus said “And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.  Do you believe this?”

H.      Spiritual light: 

Jn. 12:46  Jesus said “I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.”

I.       Power for service: 

   

Jn. 14:12  Jesus said “He who believes in me, the works that I do he will do also;  and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”

J.       Salvation:

 

Rom 1:16  Paul said  “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also the Greek (Gentiles).”

IV.     Divine Promise to the Humble:

 

Ps 138:6  David said “For the Lord is on high, yet He regards the lowly; but the proud He knows from afar.

Is 66:2  For all those things my hand has made, and all those things exist, says the Lord, but on this one I will look; on him who is poor and of a sorrowfly spirit.

Lk. 9:48  Jesus said  “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him Who sent Me.  For he who is least among you will be great.”

Lk. 14:11  Jesus said “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Ja. 4:6  (Prov. 3:34) “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

I Pet 5:5  Younger people, submit yourselves to your elders.  Yes, all of you be submissive to each other, and be clothed with humility.

V.      Divine promises to the generous:

 

Ps 41:1  Blessed is he who considers the poor; the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

Pr 3:9-10  Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so will your barns be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.

Pr 11:25  The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.

Pr 22:9  He who has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.

Pr 28:27  He who gives to the poor will not lack, but he who hides his eyes will have many curses.

Eccl. 11:1  Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.

Is 58:10  If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness shall be as the noonday.

Lk. 6:38  Give, and it shall be given to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be put into your bosom.  For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.  (Jesus said)

LK. 14:14  And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

2 Cor. 9:7  So let each one gives as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

VI.     Divine promises to the obedient; blessings promised:

 

Ex 19:5  Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.

Dt. 4:30  “When you are in distress, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the Lord your God and obey His voice (for the Lord your God is a merciful God), He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.”

Dt. 5:29  ‘Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!

Dt. 7:12  “Then it shall come to pass, because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which he swore to your fathers.”

Dt. 28:1 Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.

I Kin 3:14  If you walk in my ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.

Job 36:11  If they obey and serve Him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

Zech 3:7  If you walk in My ways, and if you keep My commandments, then you shall judge My house, and likewise have charge of My courts; I will give you places to walk among those who stand here.

Ja. 1:25  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

I Jn. 3:22  And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

Rev  22:14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.

VII.    Divine Promises to the poor:

 

A.      Divine protection:

 

Ps 12:5  For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he yearns.”

Ps 14:6  You shame the counsel of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge.

Ps. 68:10  Your congregation dwelt in it;  You, O God, provided from your goodness for the poor.

Ps 69:33  For the Lord hears the poor, and does not despise His Prisoners.

Ps 109:31  For He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those who condemn him.

Ps 140:12  I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted and justice for the poor.

Is 11:4  But with righteousness He shall judge the poor.

B.      Heavenly inheritance:

 

Ja. 2:5  Has God chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

C.      An overshadowing providence:

 

Is 25:4  For you have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat; for the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

D.      Answer to prayer:

 

Is 41:17 “When the poor and needy seek water and there is none, and their tongues fail for thirst, I, the Lord will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

VIII Divine promises to seekers:

Deut 4:29  But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

2 Chron 7:14  If My people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Pr. 8:17  I love those who love Me, and those who seek Me diligently will find Me.

Jer. 29:13  And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all of your heart.

Lk. 11:9  Jesus said “And I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you ; Seek, and you will find; Knock, and it will be opened to you.

Lk. 18:7 Jesus said, “And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?”

Jn. 14:14  Jesus said: “If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”

IX.     Divine promises to the tempted:

 

A.      Safety through Christ’s intercession:

 

Lk.  22:31-32  And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon!  Indeed Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail, and when you have returned to Me, Strengthen your brethren.”

B.      The crushing of Satan:

 

Rom. 16:20  And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.

C:  Provision of a way of escape:

I Cor. 10:13  No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you will be able to bear it.

D.      Help in the trying hour:

 

Heb. 2:18  For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

E.      Final victory:

 

Ja. 4:7  Submit to God.  Resist the Devil and he will flee from you.

I Jn. 4:4  You are of God, Little Children, and you have overcome them (false teachers, evil spirits. see vs 1 & 3)

Rev 3:10 - Jesus said “Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.”

F.       Enthronement with Christ

 

Rev. 3:21 Jesus said “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
