======================study on the names of God======================GOD'S QUESTIONS TO ADAM AND EVE.
INTRODUCTION
- A. Almost every person in the civilized world today would have to agree to the fact that the story of Adam and Eve found in Genesis 1:26 - 3:24 is a fascinating one.
- 1. For years the scientific world have denied the very basic laws of nature set out in our story;
- a. That of seed bearing after it's own kind.
- b. That God through His spoken word created the world.
2. However I believe that the written Word of God is more to us today that a good story book, or just a book by which we can be amused.- B. Scripture clearly tells us that the things that are recorded that we might learn there from...Rom 15:4
- as well that they are recorded as examples for our admonishing...I Cor 10:11.
- C. The importance of studying the Old Testament has great bearing on our understanding of the things we are to face both now and in the time to come.
- D. It is certainly good to have a good knowledge of the Bible stories of the O.T. especially the story of Adam and Eve.
- 1. We need to realize that these two are our first parents.
2. They are the reason that we are here today.
3. And it is the earliest recollection of how we as mankind began.E. It is also in Adam and Eve that Sin first entered into the world...Rom 5:12 and death with sin.
However it was also the start of the plan of redemption put into action.
- 1. Through their sinning, mankind lost a communion with God...Gen 3:8,
- as well as the home that God had provided for mankind....Vrs 23,
- which can only be regained through our submission to the will of His dear Son....John 14:6
- F. However in this study I want to deal with only a small portion of Adam and Eve, and see what we ourselves might be able to learn thereby.
- 1. Firstly We want to look at the questions God asked them after they had sinned.
- 2. Secondly we want to see the infinite wisdom of God, in asking such thought provoking questions under the circumstances, and then apply the questions to ourselves today.
- I. THE FIRST QUESTION TO ADAM WAS "WHERE ARE YOU." VRS 9
- A. Firstly it is not to be seen that God could not have known where they were, but rather it is to be seen that God asked this Question of Adam so that he might take note.
- 1. These three words display God's ability to have known where Adam and Eve where.
a. Omnipotent...all powerful....Lk 1:37 ; 18:27; Rev 19:6- b. Omniscient....all wise...I Tim 1:17
- c. Omnipresent...present everywhere at once...Psa.139:7-10
- B. The essential fact of establishing this point is that there is nothing that Adam and Eve could have told God that He did not already know.
- 1. The question to ask ourselves is why did God not go ahead and punish them right away?
2. Secondly the question is of uttermost importance otherwise it would not have been recorded for us.
a. Where are you Adam?....I'm over here hiding! I'm not where I ought to be!
b. The basis of God's question to Adam was to show Him the fact that he was out of unity with God.- C. Let us consider this question in our circumstances today?
- 1. Where are YOU in your relationship with God?
a. Many are wandering around in the darkness of this world trying to find a way out, many are wandering not knowing where they are going?
b. Thus the question to us today....Where are you?
1) Am I right with God, where I ought to be?
2) How do I stand in terms of my obedience to Him.
3) How do I stand religiously...for God, or ashamed of God?
4) Do you have any idea of where you ought to be?
2. Adam was sure of where he ought to have been, but they knew that he was not found in the right place.
a. We are going to stand before God one day and give an account of ourselves, thus it is important that we find out where we are today so that we might be confident to find ourselves in the right place when Christ's returns.
b. I John 5:13 says that our surety comes from reading the things that are written in the Word of God.- D. It is important that we are walking with God, when He returns as it is the "whole duty of man"...Eccl 12:13-14.
- 1. The importance of been in the right place can be found in passages such as:
II Cor 5:17 ; Rom 8:1....by been in Christ and an active member of His Body the Church....
II Cor 13:5 b. Have you come to Christ, yielding submission to His will and been obedient to all His commands?- E. If not your answer to the question that God asked Adam, would be the same as Adam's....I'm not where I ought to be, I'm trying to hide from you!
- F. Consider the thought provoking question of God....WHERE ARE YOU WHEN YOU FACE ALMIGHTY GOD?
- II. GOD'S SECOND QUESTION..."WHO TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE NAKED?...vrs 11.
- A. This is another thought provoking question, as God used what Adam had said in vrs 10 to make Adam come to the realization of what He had just said.
- 1. We might consider this to be a ridiculous question, but under the circumstances, Adam and Eve had no prior knowledge to Good and Evil, and they had been naked all the time they had been in the garden of Eden....Gen 2:25
2. In this condition they where in an innocent state, however this was changed by their actions, and the coming to the realization of their nakedness was to LOSE THEIR INNOCENT STATE FOREVER.- B. The essential fact being that those who had the knowledge of Good and Evil will give an account before God.
- C. Let us now turn our attention to the first half of the question....WHO TOLD YOU?
- 1. It is so often that when speaking with someone on religious matters, they will say....such and such seems like it ought to be right....The question to ask is Who told you that?
a. We hear that man can be saved by faith alone...who told you that?....God...James 2:24 or another man?
b. We hear that we don't have to be baptized for the remission of sins...who told you that?...God...Acts 2:38, Mk 16:16....or man?
c. We hear that we are to call our preacher REVEREND...you told you that...God...Psa 8:1 ;148:13, Psa 111:9 or man.
d. Who told you that it was not needed to partake of the Lord's supper on every Lord's day....God...I Cor 11: 23-26, Acts 20:7 ...or man?
e. Who told you that it was okay to miss the assembling of ourselves together...God....Heb 10:25 or man?
2. Do you see the point that God was getting Adam to recognize the authority for what he had done.
a. I firmly believe that the most quoted person in the world today is "SOMEBODY". I would really like to meet this somebody!- D. The question God asked Adam, was who told you that you were Naked?...it was not I!
- 1. Many times it is good if we stop and think about the things we do, and ask ourselves this very same question.
- III. THE THIRD QUESTION WAS ESSENTIALLY "HAVE YOU SINNED?"VRS 11 B.
- A. Again the fact is that God knew Adam had eaten of the fruit which He had forbade him to eat of, but God wanted Adam to see what His sin was.
- B. Getting people to see their sins is very difficult to do.
- 1. Usually we can see others sins before we see our own, but heed the warning of Christ....Matt 7:1-5
2. We need to examine ourselves and realize that we all have sinned....Rom 3:23; I John 1:8-10- C. The next difficulty is to try and get people to realize that their sins is what condemns them.
- 1. Adam tried to blame EVE.....Gen 3:12
2, He even turned so far as to blame God...vrs 12- D. The importance of observing this question is in the fact that it is true Godly sorrow that is necessary for forgiveness....II Cor 7:10
- 1. We must come before God humbly, with a broken and contrite spirit...not one of haughtiness....Isa 66:2; Psa 34:17-18 ; 51:17 ; Acts 17:30-31
- E. The importance of this question can be seen to day, have I sinned ? if so what am I going to do about it?
- CONCLUSION
- A. These thought provoking questions of God, are of uttermost importance to us today:
- 1. Where are you today in your relationship with God?
2. What is your source of information?
3. Have you sinned and what are you going to do about it?- B. It is my prayer that we all one day can answer these questions with
- "I'M IN THE LORD ,
- HE IS MY SOURCE OF AUTHORITY ,
- AND I HAVE REDEMPTION FROM MY SINS THROUGH HIS BLOOD."
- C. Truly what a blessed thought to be able to say that If I died today I would be with the Lord forever!
- 1. Can you say that? if not why not come to Christ obeying His word, repenting of your sins.
