Good news... I think!

Hello Hope Chest friends,

Later today or tomorrow, I'll be sending out the Hope Chest issue containing my daughter Mary's interview of King's College president Stan Oakes.

Before that, though, I wanted to let you know that I had my appointment with my endocrinologist this morning, and the thyroid biopsy came back benign, which seems to indicate no cancer.  My thyroid is also functioning correctly.   However, due to the size of the cyst, the fact that it is a "cold" nodule, and the uncertainty of biopsies, he did suggest that I consult with a surgeon.   I'll do that within the next two weeks, but anticipate that there won't be further problems.  I am not in favor of surgery, which could necessitate lifetime thyroid hormone supplementation, unless there is a very clear indication of risk.   I intend to have Dr. Roberts continue to monitor my thyroid through blood tests and ultrasounds once a year, as he suggested.  I am also cutting back on my soy protein intake, as some researchers believe this may aggravate thyroid problems.

Even as I write this, I'm aware that many others are going through problems with their thyroids, including cancer.  One  Hope Chest reader, Beth, is expecting biopsy results today, and my friend Michelle is undergoing radiation treatment for thyroid cancer after surgery was unsuccessful.  A home school dad who is a friend of my sister just had thyroid cancer surgery last week -- only diagnosed because he went to an ENT complaining of vertigo.   Many times, thyroid problems go undiagnosed until they are picked up by astute doctor during routine physical exams.  I encourage each of you to make sure you go for your annual checkups!

Thanks for your prayers!

Blessings,
Virginia Knowles
