Great home school web sites and more! (Spinach, anyone?)

Posted by: homenews <homenews@...>

Hello Hope Chest friends!

I trust that you all enjoyed the most recent Hope Chest issue on "The Creative Family"!

I'd love to call your attention to four home school web sites operated by Hope Chest readers, and to let you know about a great new home school store opening up in the Orlando area.

Also, please remember that I will send a free copy of Emilie Barnes' book Decorating Dreams on a Budget with any order of my books (The Real Life Home School Mom, Common Sense Excellence: Faith-Filled Home Education for Preschool to 5th Grade, or the Learner's Journal) by the end of April.  For more information, click here:   http://www.hopechest.homestead.com/resourceorders.html or e-mail me!  I already have a few Learner's Journals in stock, though I usually don't print these until summer!

Finally, I will be sending out the last 10 or so Hope Chest back issues on Monday to those who request them.  Please let me know if you want them!

Below this section of web site descriptions, I have included a little story about spinach!

Blessings,
Virginia Knowles

(P.S. If you want to change your address for Hope Chest mailings, send an e-mail to
[email protected] from the new address, and an e-mail to:
[email protected] from the old address.  This saves me a lot of time, which I'm rather short on lately!)

And finally, a little story about spinach!  My teenage daughter Mary has done a lot of research on nutrition this past year.  She constantly encourages me to buy dark leafy greens because they are much more nutritious than iceberg lettuce.  Unfortunately, they often get buried in the produce drawer of our refrigerator, and go bad before we finish eating them.  And they aren't cheap!  So, the last time we brought out a fresh bag of spinach for dinner, she went on a campaign to make sure we ate it!    "Spinach... for a healthy America!" she chanted as she gleefully served it onto our plates.    When she put it away, she posted a sign in the refrigerator: "EAT THE SPINACH!"

The next night, three year old Micah stumbled out of his bedroom to join us for dinner.  He'd had the tummy flu, and hadn't wanted to eat solid food in a couple of days.  I tried to tempt him with some yummy bananas from our fruit salad, but he refused.  "I want the green stuff!" he begged.   Then he ate two bowls of spinach!  Imagine that!  Oh, the power of example!  And yes, we did finish that bag of spinach within two or three days.  I'm not really a veggie lover myself, but if someone puts it on my plate, I'm likely to eat it.  Spinach really does taste great if it is FRESH!

I find it so encouraging when my children find topics that personally interest them, do their own research, and share their findings with the family.  It is even more special when they APPLY their knowledge to enrich our daily lives together.  This is home schooling at its best!

May your family be blessed with a love of learning!

Blessings,
Virginia Knowles
