I've been playing bass instead of guitar in church for several years now, and have played bass off and on really since I started playing praise and worship. Lately, I've come to a couple of conclusions:
1. I don't have the money to invest in gear like some of you guys do. But I have some pretty nice gear, so I ain't complaining.
2. I'm never going to be Geddy Lee. I'm never going to stray very far from whacking the roots.
3. I have to use a pick when I need to play a lot of 16th notes. I keep better rhythm with it, and my fingers don't tire. I'm getting a little arthritis in my right hand and my IM speed just isn't there.
4. I'm not embarrassed about any of this because folks at church seem to appreciate my playing.
5. Even though electric guitar is my first love, God seems to want me to play bass, so I'm going to be a bass player and be enthusiastic about it. I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in my church's worship ministry.
