Hidden Places is the first novel I have read by Lynn Austin and I will be reading more! I just loved this book.
Now I tend to like historical fiction, but it was so much more than that. In fact, this did not really read like historical fiction to me. This book is set in the 1930s in an orchard in the Midwest. Eliza Wyatt is a young widow with 3 children and a past full of hurt and secrets and a heart that reaches out to the lost souls of the world traveling the rails with no home or food.
Gabriel is one of these lost souls and he reaches out to help Eliza and her family during a difficult time. His familiarity with the farm raises questions in Eliza, as to whom Gabriel really is.
Through out this novel, we see secrets hidden and secrets revealed. It is like working a puzzle. Each piece is revealed and placed in just the right spot to create the finished work.
The back of this book says it is "a captivating tale of lives intertwined by needs and circumstance, family and love." That sums it up nicely! I loved the characters -- maybe that is why I loved this book so much! They are rich and have dimension, not just some cardboard cut outs that are often found in novels. I felt as if I had entered their hidden places while I read -- as if I could read their minds and hearts.
A great book!
