HIGHS AND LOWS
by J. Randal Matheny

The sunny disposition comes and goes,
The heavenly highs are dogged by human lows.

One drags the will behind, reluctant child
Which ill responds and seldom leaves the wild.

O happy hour when will and duty wed!
How sour when unwanted duty causes dread!

The limbs grow tired, the feet weighed down with lead
But shuffle when requirements fill the head.

Passion lifts the chore, desire gives wings;
When love's at work, the whole body sings.
