Hohner nylon string/Squier J bass

Posted by: rxdca <rxdca@...>

Friday I went out and bought my daughter a Hohner nylon string classical for
$150. Seemed like a good deal. I printed her out a CAGED chord sheet. She was
playing it when I went to bed. I got up at 3am to get a drink of water and she
was still up playing. Yesterday she printed off a couple of song chord sheets
and last night she played me a song. I didn't get the Wife Approval Factor
before buying it, it was a total impulse thing, so I got scolded a little when
we got home with it. I had bought a case from Musician's Friend when I bought
my Ibanez classic, which didn't fit the Ibanez, so I already had a case for
it.

I also had a Fender Squier Jazz bass that I bought for my son a couple of
years ago, but he never played it (picked up the guitar instead). I took it
and had it set up for her with a very low action. I bought a Gotoh replacement
bridge, very much like the Leo Quan bridge but it was only $28, and dropped in
a couple of BassLines PU's. The mods cost a little bit more than $125
altogether. But it sounds fantastic, like an American Standard and plays like
a dream. However, I think the second I bought the Hohner my daughter lost all
interest in the bass.

I'm going to start teaching her finger picking, I want her to learn to finger
pick from the beginning. I'm going to start her with proper right hand
technique with the bent wrist and all that, unlike my own technique which is
terrible. It's going to be pretty fun. She's a LOT more patient and attentive
than my son was.
