Dear Hope Chest friend,I received this from a reader who got it via the North Carolina state home education association. I think we should all be watching CBS news tonight! (I guess I'll have to borrow a TV!)Blessings,Virginia KnowlesOctober 11, 2003 7:29 PMSubject: Homeschooling = Child Abuse, CBS Evening News, Monday & Tuesday, October 13th & 14th,To All Region 12 support group leaders,Following discussions that Hal Young, the president of NCHE, had on Friday with the CBS Evening News producer, it is anticipated that CBS will be running a 2 part series on Monday & Tuesday evening on Homeschooling (The report is already complete, but be mindful that other news may possibly preempt it). This report is expected to focus on the handful of child abuse cases over the past 5 to 10 years involving "presumed homeschoolers" including the murder/suicide of "Non homeschooled homeschoolers" in Johnston County, NC two years ago. The CBS reporters will be highlighting various murders, suicides, etc. involving "homeschoolers" nationwide and will attempt to argue that "Homeschooling is out of control". The woman producer stated directly to Hal that he "would not be pleased with the report", and that the intent of the report is to encourage further state and federal government regulation of homeschooling.I encourage you to both watch these reports and pray as we seek to understand the effects of this reporting on homeschooling in North Carolina. Jan & I will be praying over the following:
- That the report when aired will be little watched in terms of Market Share and perceived for exactly what it is, a biased attack on homeschooling.
- That as with Balaam in the Bible, nothing will said against us that God does not allow.
- That the Lord will use this incident for His Glory and our encouragement.
In addition, I encourage you to monitor the sponsors of the commercials surrounding the segment and issue E-mails to the companies involved stating our displeasure with their sponsoring of these sorts of attacks and our intent to consider their sponsorship when making product purchase decisions. E-mail/letters to CBS News itself may also be used, but this route would be expected to be ineffective, as their Editorial Board obviously supports this reporting. Both NCHE and HSLDA will be monitoring this report closely and you should expect further information from both sources. Please feel free to pass this message to anyone that you desire. In Christ's Service,Mike BrindleNCHE Region 12 district director
