Hooters?

Posted by: petecamp <petecamp@...>

What a Sunday! We have a deacon (!) in our church that blew up, slammed down
his Bible, and stormed out of the Deacon's meeting tonight shouting and
vowing never to come back to the church. Why did all this happen? Our
associate Pastor for Youth took a "Hooters" hat away from his son, who wore
it to church during Vacation Bible School last week-after repeated warnings
that he was going to do it if he didn't take it off. Now mind you, this
whole family goes to Hooters every chance they get. This deacon said in the
deacon's meeting that a hooters hat (or shirt, which he, the deacon,
actually wore to church one night) didn't mean a thing and since we had
never been there, our problem was that our minds were in the gutter.

His son (high school sophomore) certainly knows what it means-he had a
Hooters shirt on when the youth group was about to leave for a Christian
concert a few months back and I happened to ask him if he knew what it
meant. He used some graphic language and told me. I then informed him that
he couldn't go to the concert with that shirt on, (our youth Pastor was too
shocked to even speak) and he just shrugged, said "okay" and went home. He
has since told me that since his mom and dad don't have a problem with
Hooters, (I find her acceptance of her son and husband wearing these items
even more incredible), we shouldn't have a problem with him wearing it
either. This "Hooters mom" caused a family to leave the church last summer
by angrily demanding that a mom do something about her daughter wearing
short skirts in front of her son. Amazing.

To top everything off tonight, (after this deacon left the meeting), I asked
what the deacons what they would think if I wore a Playboy shirt in the
pulpit. Know what response I got? Nothing! Not a word.

Dear friends, I am really saddened. I have a terrible case of "I'm preaching
and teaching the Word and no one gives a hoot", to use a play on words. If
this is the real moral condition of our folks in this church, after nearly 7
years of ministry here, maybe I should stomp the dust from my feet and leave
also. I'm sorry to burden this group with this, but I need two things. One,
I need to know if I'm being overly sensitive or something here that I
shouldn't be? And two, I need prayer. Monday is coming and most of you know
how Monday is with a minister. Tonight I really wish God had called me to be
a shoe salesman. 🙁

Thanks and may God bless each one of you,
Pete Campbell
