DIGGING DEEPER:

Scriptures About Living for the Gospel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I include these Bible verses as a challenge to live for the gospel: by receiving it wholeheartedly, obeying God's word, and sharing it with others near and far. All Scriptures are from the New International Version, and italic bold emphases are mine.
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." Matthew 9:35-38
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it." Mark 8:34-35
"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, `Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together." John 4:34-37
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. Acts 20:24
Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 1 Corinthians 9:16
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:17-20
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 2 Corinthians 9:12-13
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Philippians 1:27
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation-- if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. Colossians 1:21-23
For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 1:4-6
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. Titus 3:3-8
Mission Opportunity for Young People in Japan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is a last minute addition to the Hope Chest, thanks to a reminder from Ruthann Wells.  It isn't in the main table of contents in part 1, which was sent out a few minutes ago.  I am not including all of the information that I have; you can contact Phyllis directly for more details at [email protected]

The Baptist churches of Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan would like to invite to their churches some American young people who could assist them in English conversation outreach for one or more months during the summer of 2004.   This opportunity is being organized by Phyllis Reinhardt, who is the mother of my friend Beth Brown.  She and her family were missionaries to Japan from 1965-1975, and home schooled there.   A candidate should be a ministry-oriented Christian, and have finished at least the junior year of high school or above.  The Japanese churches would provide food and housing for each young person, but the participants themselves would be responsible for raising the money for airplane tickets, passports and train fare while in Japan. (At present, tickets to and from Japan are between $900 - $1000 and train fare between Tokyo and Yamagata is about $200 round trip.)   Phyllis is mainly looking for people in the Orlando area, as she will need to conduct training and offer Japanese language instruction.

WHAT’S NEW AT THE KNOWLES HOUSE?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My daughter Mary facetiously calls this section "a privileged look at the saintly life of Virginia Knowles and her nine perfect offspring." NOT! Many moms have told me that they’d love to be a fly on my wall to see what goes on around here. Lord have mercy! About a dozen years ago, I asked Mary Pride (prolific author and mom-of-many) if she would consider making a video about her own family life -- home schooling, home birth, home business, home everything. She hastily and wisely declined... After all, "discretion is the better part of valor."
But here’s a little peek at our house anyway. I lay down while nursing Ben, but we weren’t exactly alone on the bed. Andrew (6) had pulled out his math book (which we didn’t quite finish yet) and was trying to do subtraction with number lines. My bed, as usual, doubles as a school desk year round. Naomi (2) tried to give baby Ben raspberry kisses on his tummy, but kept spitting on him instead. He was spitting (up) too, but his was a little more pungent. Micah spread out my herbal heat pack, but Naomi kept grabbing it away. Then she bounced up and down on my bed, whacking me in the head when she finally plopped down. "Sowwy, mommy!" Now add sound effects -- wild singing ("John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" is the current favorite around here), miscellaneous squeals, teething baby grunts, and various thumps and bumps.   Ah, motherhood!
Last night, we drove out to Apopka for the Fourth of July celebration, which was co-sponsored by the city, community organizations, local churches and Z88.3, a Christian radio station. Christian singer Mark Schultz was the featured performer, and he took full advantage of the opportunity to sing of God’s grace. It was awesome! Between that and the fireworks, the night was lighted up brightly!
Thanks for your continued prayers for my mother-in-law, Ann Knowles, as she endures the end stages of terminal lung cancer. She is feeling so much better, and has transferred to another hospital for palliative care. We appreciate all the notes of encouragement we have received, and know that many of you are also going through intense medical treatments with loved ones. Please pray for the Cleve family as they see their nine month old Zoe through leukemia treatments. They have already been at Vanderbilt hospital for two months! (Visit them at http://www.shesmiles.com)
May God bless you all as you prepare yourselves and others for eternity.
Blessings,
Virginia Knowles
