Hope Chest Extras and Announcements for January 15, 2008
Quote from Forum Archives on January 15, 2008, 3:20 pmPosted by: hopechestnews <hopechestnews@...>
Dear friends,
I have a few event announcements for Florida readers, but first a personal note about a death in our family...As many of you know, my paternal grandmother, Margaret Driggs, passed away in her sleep early Sunday morning in Denver at the ripe old age of 98. I remember her as a true lady who always encouraged our education, and would clip any interesting newspaper articles that she thought we might enjoy. She was fond of calling our children sweet names like "Angel Dolly" and exclaiming over them with much affection. You can read her obituary on-line at: http://obit.horanandmcconaty.com/obitdisplay.html?id=494958&listing=Current.My Aunt Camille has been kind enough to provide me with an airline ticket to fly to Salt Lake City for the funeral. I have been asked to select a Scripture passage to read at the funeral. I haven't picked it out yet, but it will probably have something to do with the lovely old hymn called "Beyond the Sunset" (http://my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis2/sunset.html) which my mother, Mary Quarrier, will sing. My grandmother will be buried next to her late second husband, Dr. Howard R. Driggs, who was an eminent pioneer historian, college professor, and prolific author. (As an interesting historical tidbit, when they married, she was 39 and he was 75. He was born in the 1870s into a polygamous Mormon family with 22 children. And no, despite the fact that we have 10 kids ourselves, we are neither Mormon nor Catholic. We attend a Sovereign Grace church, which is an interesting mix of reformed, baptist and charismatic theology.) You can read about Dr. Driggs at http://www.li.suu.edu/driggscollection/biography.html. Many years ago, when Thad and I were in Kansas for a friend's wedding, we were in an antique store and found a vintage copy of a first grade English text book, First Language Lessons, that he had written around 1913 -- when my grandmother was only four! ) I am leaving early on Thursday morning with a loaded laptop computer and MP3 player, so I should be "good to go" for all the time I will spend in airplanes/airports! I plan to write the February issue of the Hope Chest en route, as well as read PDF files of various classic Christian books that I downloaded for free from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library at www.CCEL.org. I will arrive home Sunday evening in time to teach my beloved middle school English class at our co-op on Monday. The Southwest Florida Homeschool Fair is coming up in Fort Myers on February 1-2. Mark Hamby of Lamplighter Books is the keynote speaker, and there will be plenty of workshops and vendors You can find more information here: http://www.swflhomeschoolfair.com/ (Thank you to my dear friend Marlene Baron for passing this information along.)Now for those who live in the Orlando area, here are a few more announcements...This is a little reminder about the Books and Beyond literature seminar which will be held all day on Saturday, January 26. I will be teaching a session on "The Bible as Literature." Please note: the early registration deadline is JANUARY 15 (that's today!) though you can register at the door. (You have a better chance of getting the seminar sessions you want if you register early.) You can find the registration form, list of workshops, and presenter biographies on Cheryl Bastian's web site at www.CherylBastian.com. I have included much more information below. On the same day, my favorite contemporary author, Gary Thomas, will be in town for an all day Sacred Marriage seminar. Here is the blurb for that: "Gifted conference speaker and prolific author, Gary Thomas, will be in Orlando, January 26, 2008, to present the SACRED MARRIAGE CONFERENCE. Maitland Civic Center
Gary's Conference is divided into 4 sessions: (about one hour each)
Session 1: Sacred Marriage

Gary Challenges marital expectations and tries to help us focus on changing ourselves through marriage instead of focusing on changing our spouse.
Session 2: Sacred History
Here Gary looks at the meaning two people build together by persevering through the good and bad times. Gary connects this journey with God's relationship with Israel, and then he talks about some of the seasons of marriage that most couples pass through. This session usually hits people pretty hard (in a good way), as it demonstrates that profound meaning and power of two people walking in marital intimacy for life.
Session 3: Sexual Saints
Here Gary deals with the spiritual aspect of physical intimacy. It is not a "how to" session in any sense; rather, Gary looks at the attitudes we bring into the bedroom and explores how God can use even the sexual relationship to help us grow spiritually.
Session 4: Learning to Love
The theme of this final session is that marriage is about teaching us how to love. Rather than ask, "Am I happier today than I was yesterday?" Gary builds toward having people ask, "How can I love my spouse today like he/she has never been loved?" He ends the seminar with an inspiring account of a woman who loved her husband in an extravagant way.
