HOPE CHEST HOME SCHOOL NEWS
EXTRAS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
JULY 10, 2002
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Hello Hope Chest friends!I hope you all enjoyed the issue I sent out last week. If you have joined
the Hope Chest list since then, I'll be glad to send this and other back
issues to you on request. Or, if you've been with us for a while, but
want other back issues, you can let me know that, too. If you asked for a
change in e-mail address or an unsubscription. It will be a few days
before I can get to this, so if you want to do it yourself, here's how:I'm sure that many of you are in the throes of curriculum planning, as we
are. I have been amazed at how God has graciously provided so many of the
items on my wish list, either through finding things in the Homeschool
Corner area of a local consignment store, or through friends offering
resources that they are no longer using. Also, as I pulled together all
of our American history books from various and sundry shelves throughout
the house, I found that there is very little that I still need to buy. I
had forgotten how much we had already! Between that and the library, we
should be pretty well set! Yes, there is a time to buy things NEW. My
friend Cindy says her "rule of thumb" is that if the publisher is a
family business, like Apologia or KONOS or Beautiful Feet, she prefers to
buy the books new so that the business can stay afloat. On the other
hand, if it is a big publisher, like A Beka or BJU, she has no qualms
about buying used.I guess I know what Cindy means about the "small family publisher" since
in our own business, I write the books, take them to the print shop, and
enter orders in a simple database. Rachel (our very organized 11 year
old) packages them for shipping at our card table. The whole business is
located in a little den wedged between the living room and kitchen,
though I confess that I store my case of bubble wrap out in the garage!
Yes, the post office employees are used to me coming in with armloads of
packages, but a big corporation we are not! And that's just the way I
want it, since I am a home school mom just like you. Speaking of that,
the kitchen is in dire need of some attention...If you missed my resource list with descriptions of the books, please let
me know, and I would be glad to send it to you.For those who have asked, the pregnancy is going well enough, though I've
been both groggy and queasy all the time. I will see the midwife for the
first time on July 25. It's definitely different being "in a family way"
with #9 at age 38, as compared to the first time when I was 23! On the
bright side, I now have some wonderful older daughters to help me out
with my little ones! I also have three other pregnant friends who are at
a MUCH higher medical risk than I am, so I guess I can't really complain.The real purpose of this little message is to promote several other
family home school businesses. Check them out below, and please tell them you heard about it in the Hope Chest!
WRITE ON CREATIVE WRITING COURSE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Virginia's note: My daughter Mary took the Write On class a few years
ago, and really enjoyed it! I think your children will, too.~~~Do you need a writing course for the coming school year? Gwen Simmons is
offering a special price to Hope Chest members for her WRITE ON!
correspondence course. If you enroll before July 20, Gwen is offering a
$10 discount. In addition to that, $5 can be subtracted for each
additional family member who enrolls. WRITE ON! uses a relaxed approach
to spark interest in the reluctant writer as well as provide challenge
for the student who already loves to write. The student's own interests
are incorporated into lessons when possible and a critique is given with
each assignment. Parents and students call WRITE ON! the antidote to dry
workbooks. WRITE ON! is designed for grades 3-12 and can count as one
semester credit for high school English. To see sample lessons, a
complete course description, testionials of students and parents, and
info about the instructor, please visit Gwen's website at
