SAMARITANS PURSE UPDATE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>From Nancy Ribot: I called the 800# for Samaritan's Purse and was told
that the 2001 Christmas catalog was a special project. They no longer
have them available for this year but they did add me to their mailing
list for
next year. They do have the catalog available online at the link that you
sent to us in the newsletter. I just thought that I would let you know in
case you might want to advise others on the mailing list. I know that the
organization has to pay for all of their calls that they receive on the
800#. Maybe you could recommend that people look for the catalog online
and use the 800# for credit (or debit) card donations. - Nancy Ribot~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FLYING ANYWHERE FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Delta Airline says if you are planning to fly over the holidays and going
to carry on your Christmas packages, do not wrap them until after the
flight. Unidentified wrapped items will be throughly searched, possibly
destroying any holiday wrapping. This applies to ANY CHECKED ITEM as
well. If you plan to check Christmas presents make sure they are packaged
well so they don't get damaged. Items can very easily get damaged in
cargo, especially something breakable.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RESPONSES TO HARRY POTTER MESSAGE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I so appreciated your article on Harry Potter and I agree with your
position. You did an excellent job expressing your convicts and I plan to
reread your piece several times to build up my own arsenal. The only
thing I wanted to point out, though, is that you said Chuck Colson finds
"Harry Potter" delightful, yet I just got an email from him saying the
opposite. I've included it for you to read. ~~ Mary Lou [I cant quote
the entire Chuck Colson message, but he says he has major reservations
about Harry Potter now.]Just to let you know that your interview about Harry Potter showed up in
the Birmingham News, in an article about the movie. Keep up the good
work. Keep standing up for God. You don't know how many people you have
reached. ~~ LydiaMy husband and I are also becoming more and more selective in what we
allow our children to read. In fact, I need to go through boxes of books
and toss a bunch of them out. We watch for things like magic, silliness,
stories where the children do wrong things and yet there's no
consequence, a fostering of an independent spirit in the children, the
adults made to look foolish and the chilren being the heros/wise ones.
Sometimes the illustrations are offensive. We are concentrating more and
more on books that our children can learn from - practical things. I'm
not totally against fiction but too much doesn't really prepare our
chilren for
mature adulthood. ~~ KarenThank you so much for this letter. I had been wondering about the Harry
Potter series and whether or not I should try them and see what they were
like in light of all the controversy. Now I think I'll save myself the
trouble. I had been trying to rationalize the books with the "they are
just like other fantasy books like the Wizard of Oz books" theory. As I
was reading your post I came to realize that what difference will the
absence of these few books or movies make in our lives. There are so very
many good things to read and see that we probably will never hit them all
anyway, so why waste time on these that might be damaging. I cannot see
us going into Harry Potter withdrawal if we don't read these, but I can
see how Satan could invade our lives if we do. I am NOT willing to take
that chance for even a good sounding book, let alone one I'm not even
sure we would like. ~~ SueThought you might be interested in these two articles if you haven't read
them already:
Can Christians Read Harry Potter? Should they? Here are my thoughts.
users.erols.com/philkent/FatherCanChristiansReadHarryPotter.htm[Virginia's note: The above site has a good children's book list at the
end of it!]Teaching Your Children About Fads: I was asked to share Biblical concerns
about Pokemon recently at a Contenders for the Faith club meeting. As I
approached this subject, it seemed that to focus my attention on one
particular fad would be a failure to deal with all that needs to be
addressed. This is more of a personal testimony, than a specific word
from the Lord to all Christians.
Phil Kent
philkent@erols.com"Our entertainment is a way of socializing, whether it be by person to
person conact, a movie we watch, the music we listen to, or printed
materials that we read. Think about it: do we not read the Bible and
Bible-based publications to draw closer to God? The same can be true of
these Harry Potter books only with negative results. I'm all for
fostering fantasy and creativity in children, but I do believe it can be
done without delving into something that is questionable. Make-believe
can be done in an wholesome way. When the Bible tells us to do all things
for the glory of God, why would we want to take the chance of "inviting"
spiritism into our homes? I know there are plenty of parents who think
that Harry Potter is harmless, but I just felt compelled to let you know
how strongly I feel about this and to let you know that you are not alone
in your feelings. ~~PamMy mom is a practicing wiccan and she has shared with me that many of the
spells and language in the books are real and that the author truly did
her homework. I will not read them just with that knowledge. My mom
understands my beliefs and if she knows something is against them- like
this book she will tell me. ~~ ChrissylnnI thank you and applaud your stance. I was encouraged by a Christian
friend and school teacher to read a Harry Potter book and then make a
decision on whether or not to let my children read them. Well, I read the
first book and I can tell you my children will not be reading them. They
make evil and sin look good and right. My fear is this is another way for
Satan to gradually get control of our youth. Thank you again for your
stand for right. ~~ TerriMy husband and I also evaluate what comes into our home and we too talk
about the fact that everything we do and say must glorify God. They come
to us and say "so and so at church is allowed to do thus and so or say
thus and so" etc. and we have to explain to them that their parents are
in charge of them and what they do or don't do is not for us to judge but
we have to stand before God and make sure our OWN lives are pleasing to
Him. ~~ Sharon
