    Is the Lord’s Supper boring!?

    NTK
I have seen believers leaving the Assembly Worship service just after the Lord’s Supper, skipping the ministry of the word of God. But it was the first time I saw believers skipping the Lord’s Supper and turn up only for the ministry of the word! Not just few but the majority of the believers come only after the Lord’s Supper. For their convenience one more offering is taken! When I asked a young man about this strange practice, he told me that ‘it is a boring service, Sunday after Sunday the same!’

Before we find fault with these believers we need to seriously consider if our service is really boring or not. Our various gatherings, whether worship meeting, word ministry or prayer, is it a boring time? What is the reason why the participants find no enjoyment in our spiritual services?

One thing is evident; it shows the real state of the Church. Church as a whole failed to appreciate the value of the Lord’s Supper. Like the traditional churches, it seems the evangelical church too has made Lord’s Supper just a ritual. There are some who think that whatever be the condition of their life they need bread and wine on the Lord’s Day, that’s enough. They come only for that. It seems they assume that by participating from the bread and wine they will be forgiven, or blessed. Not only had they lost sight of their own spiritual state, but the person whom these emblems point out.

Lewis Samraj a well known Bible teacher in India suggests that it is the result of poor leadership. If they are not spiritual and unable to take the believers to the spiritual level to appreciate the remembrance of the Lord, such dryness will come. He feels that in many assemblies, teachings on worship or Lord’s Supper is plenty but real remembrance of the Lord is nil. No body speaks on the person and work of Christ in such a way that the attention of the audience will be drawn to Christ. To speak in such a manner one ought to spent sufficient time with Lord Jesus Christ. Leaders have no time, no wonder it has become a boring service!

In obedience to the commandment of Christ the disciples gathered regularly to partake from the Lord’s Supper. Luke.22:19; 1Cor.11:24. Act.2:42, 46. Even when they were on journey they made it a point to observe it. Act.20:7. They were well aware of the importance and significance of the Lord’s Supper. They could not ignore the desire of their Lord in remembering His love and sufferings for them.

Brethren Believers from the very beginning gave much importance to worship and remembrance. Even the critics have appreciated the way early Brethren broke bread on the Lord’s Day. Anne Arnott, wife of an Anglican minister, while narrating the story of her child hood in a Plymouth Brethren household writes this, “The whole of the morning service, however, centred on the ‘Lord’s Supper’, and the great simplicity of their manner of receiving this Sacrament held something of real value. The table on which the elements were placed stood among the people. After prayer, the large loaf of bread was broken and divided on to four pewter plates, and these were then passed from one to another, each taking a morsel. The wine was poured into large goblets and these were also passed from one to another. That there was real devotion and pure worship at this time I am sure.” Notice, her intention was to write against the brethren, but at this point she can not ignore their devotion.

True believers always value the Lord’s Supper. It is not just obeying the command of Christ but sweet and precious time to remember the Lord. Meditating upon the greatness and perfections of the person of Christ prompts them to fall at His feet. The thoughts of His sufferings signified by these emblems elevate the believer to a higher level of spiritual life in appreciating Christ and adoring Him. Such declaration of His glory and sacrifice has touched many unbelievers who happened to be present among the saints during worship meeting.

Zephaniah C. H. an evangelist in Andhra Pradesh recalls his child-hood experience during the worship service. As a non-participant he used to sit in the back. The participants sit around the table in the front. Even today he remembers the joy and glory found on the face of the saints as they remembered the Lord Jesus. He says, ‘though they were uneducated farmers, they looked like angels!’

Not only it is a declaration of the death of Christ, Lord’s Supper was also meant to be a time of fellowship. By participating from one bread and one cup we are acknowledging our kinship and unity afresh. 1Cor.10: 16, 17. Another aspect of the Lord’s Supper is the anticipation of the soon coming of Christ. 1Cor.11:26. Instead of these emblems we are going to see Christ himself and worship face to face.

Can a believer neglect such important and meaningful commandment of Christ? Can any body even suggest cancelling or modifying the Lord’s Supper because few unconverted participants may not enjoy it! If any body feels it as a boring time, they need to examine their own spiritual life and fervour. Of course the leaders too have to make sure that the service will be lively and meaningful.

If observed in truth and spirit it is a time of remembrance, declaration, celebration and anticipation. This hour can touch the heart of believers and unbelievers apart from the triune God. There is mutual joy, satisfaction and Glory. How can we neglect the Lord’ Supper?

Study Note:- The Tongs and Snuff dishes or boxes

    C.E.Wigg, TASMANIA.
These instruments were for the tending, or trimming of the wicks of each lamp. We read in Lev. 24, that Aaron was to "order, or trim" the lamps from the evening to the morning, this is repeated in Ex. 27:20-21. Though the wicks are not mentioned, it is well known that the lamps would not burn without a wick made of cotton, or some other soft, absorbent fibre. The wick soaks up the oil and enables the flame of the light to burn.

As the wick burns carbon is formed, which prevents the proper absorption of the oil. This has to be removed before the lamp will burn with its proper brilliance. The High Priest, or one of his sons, would come, take the golden tongs in his hand, and the snuff dish in the other, and without extinguishing the lamp, he would gently crush the carbon, a little at a time, catching the black dust in the golden snuff dish, thus preventing the carbon from falling on the beautiful lamp stand, for if it did, then it would tarnish its beauty.

Once the carbon was removed, the lamp would continue to burn with a bright and even flame, and because the snuff dish was used, the beauty of the lamp stand was not tarnished, or defiled. How this reminds us of the tender grace of our Great High Priest, as through the long night of His public absence He has been patiently tending each member of each local Assembly, gently removing the burnt out self, that hinders the free flow of the Holy Spirit in our lives, so that we may "so let our light shine before men". He does it so gently, and confines the defilement, so that others are not tarnished by that which He has to remove.

He does this in different ways, it may be through our personal reading of the Bible, He will cause some verse to convict us, by the Holy Spirit, of something that is wrong in our lives, that is causing our light to burn dim. It may be carelessness, apathy, materialism, (serving mammon instead of serving God), it may be sin of some kind, or disobedience to His word. He may do it through the reading of a little paper like this, or through a word of ministry given in the local Assembly. Though it may hurt at the time, and may even provoke resentment in us, yet He does it only in love, for our good, and especially for the good of the testimony.

But then Aaron's sons were also given this task, each of us are members of the priestly family, and we are to serve one another, just as Christ serves us. The public ministry in the Assembly is to be exercised by the men alone, 1 Cor. 14;34-35, 1 Tim. 2; 9-15. But sometimes sisters may do this privately, in a humble and comely way. However we must be careful to use only the Golden tongs, and the snuff dishes, and to do it in the same gracious way that our Great High Priest has dealt with us. In Matthew chapter 5;23-26, and chapter 18;15-18, the Lord Jesus teaches us how we are to serve each other, so that what hinders and grieves the Holy Spirit may be removed, and the lamp of testimony burn more brightly. In chapter 18;15 He emphasizes that when we seek to serve each other in this delicate ministry, we must be careful not to spread the defilement, "between him and thee alone".

How often we break this code of conduct, we are prone to tell every one of our brother or sisters faults, or misdeeds, and often do not even have the courage to face the person themselves, especially alone. Because of this, the defilement is spread, the Lamp stand is tarnished, and its gold does not sparkle as it should. May the Lord help us to learn these lessons, and above all to put them into practice!

      Anecdote: -

      The Transfusion

There was an orphanage near an American Marine Base in Vietnam. One day the Viet Cong fired mortar shell in to the orphanage, killing dozens of children and wounding many more. A boy named Kai had seriously wounded friend who needed a blood transfusion. Kai’s friend had a rare blood type and only Kai’s blood matched it. Little Kai had never heard of a blood transfusion but when the American doctors explained it would save his friend’s life, little Kai volunteered.

As the blood began to flow from Kai to his friend, Kai began to sob. When the doctors asked if it hurt, he said no. A little later he sobbed again. Again he told the doctors it did not hurt. The doctors asked, “What’s wrong, Kai?” With tears coursing down his light brown dusty cheeks, Kai asked, “When am I to die sir, when am I to die?” “You see, little Kai” the doctor replied, “You don’t know that you only gave a little blood.
He thought he gave it all and he was willing to do so for his little friend.

      Matters for Prayer & Praise:

      Ministry in The Bahamas

The assembly work in the Bahamas in the western Atlantic Ocean was started in 1875. The number of Assemblies is around 32 and full time workers 36. 96% of the population is Christians-among them 35% Baptists.

The Brethren are struggling to keep the testimony alive. They just refuse to “accept the decline in evangelistic effectiveness, discipleship, and numbers as part of the “falling away” to be expected in the last days, but seek to reverse the decline and maintain a strong witness.” There are few able men who left the assembly to lead other ministries and are highly respected among Christians in Bahamas. Considering the great need of visionary leaders and gifted and trained teachers, the five Assemblies in New Providence are constructing a facility called The Christian Life Centre in Nassau, the capital.

The Centre will house an auditorium and conference centre large enough for crusades, conferences, conventions, a Bible college and other united functions. The major goal of The Christian Life Centre is to encourage real spiritual life, evangelistic and pastoral effectiveness, and growth in local churches and their individual members. Systematic Bible teaching, leadership training and special evangelistic efforts focusing various age groups will be conducted at the centre.
Please pray that the believers would give financially, give in labour, and expertise to see the project come to completion. Pray for the evangelistic and spiritually edifying programmes that will come out of this centre until the Lord comes.
