Life Passes Far Too Fast, Eternal God
by J. Randal Matheny © 2013

Life passes far too fast, eternal God.
Is this your doing, then? Did you design
The rush of events and the crashing speed of days
To create in me the desire for you, the Timeless?

The days and hours to you, O Lord, neither rush
Nor drag—no delay or accelerating years.
You stand above the clock, the Everlasting,
Yet entered our world by birth for death, your plan.

Millennial ages make no promise old.
Your gentle patience gives us time to repent,
While Terra whirls around the burning sun,
And mankind hurls himself toward the fires.

Is this all there is? ask minds that think,
Who see design in all that moves and lives.
Is nothing greater than what we see or touch?
Beyond the grave and dust does Someone lurk?

Lurking, no, but showing power and grace,
Revealing Self, redeeming the human race,
Seeking to be found of man, and at last—
Eternity, which cannot come too fast.
