"Lift Him Up"

There are TONS of songs that speak of "lifting up Jesus." When reading
the Bible, however, the only references that I can find to this are in
the Gospel of John 3, 8, and 12, especially:

John 12:32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men
to myself."

But the next verse makes it plain what Jesus was talking about (and
subsequently, the other verses that speak of Jesus being lifted up):

John 12:33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

Jesus /was/ lifted up, on the Cross, and is now drawing all men by the
Holy Spirit unto himself. Lifting him up is not something that we do
now or can do now (at least in the same sense as it is being used in
John), it is something that has happened. So, why do we sing so many
songs about lifting up Jesus, what do we mean by it, and should we be
singing them?
