Living in Obedience

Posted by: <@...>

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he
was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he
was going. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations,
whose designer and builder is God. Hebrews 11:8, 10

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my
ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah
55:8-9

Have you ever noticed that God often doesn't make much sense? I don't
mean that irreverently; what I'm saying is that when God tells us to do
something, it often baffles our finite human understanding. It doesn't
make sense to our "natural" thinking. It is not until later - sometimes
much later - that we grasp the reasons for His leading. His ways
fulfill His purposes, whether they make sense to us or not.

Jesus left the glory, the splendor, the timelessness of heaven and came
to earth. He didn't come in His majesty; He came as a human being. He
wasn't born to royalty; He came to a poor family. He didn't come as a
conquering king; He came as a tiny infant. What appeared to be the
ultimate demotion according to human estimation allowed God Himself to
become one with His creation - God with us, Emmanuel.

When His disciples argued over who was greatest among them, Jesus taught
them that he who would be greatest must be the servant of all (Luke
22:25-27).

At the end of His 33 years on earth, Jesus faced desertion by His
followers, a mock trial, scourging, and the cross - the most horrendous
method of torture known to man. After three years of ministry, He had
only a couple hundred followers to His name. In natural terms, it could
be called a supreme failure. But His life, death and resurrection
forever altered the course of human history.

When we don't know what's ahead, can we follow His direction? When we
don't see how He's orchestrating things, can we trust that He has a
plan? When His thoughts don't mesh with ours, can we concede that His
are higher? Can we, in child-like trust, simply take His hand and let
Him lead?

Father, thank You for the awesome privilege of walking with You. Today,
tomorrow, next week, next month - they were all written in your book
before one of them was lived. Though my eyes can't see the pathway,
Father, You know it altogether. And where You lead me, I will follow.
In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
